In 2015, Luhnow went out and got Scott Kazmir fairly early and, of course, obtained Carlos Gomez and Fiers. Neither of those trades worked out as well as anticipated. I wonder if Luhnow was burned by that.
If Britton ends up in NY then I would take that as a sign (assuming it's not an absurd overpay) that Luhnow did not see Britton as critical to the team’s success this season.
Point taken, but Verlander was a unique circumstance (slumping team, hurricane, Jim Crane ordered the trade) and Cole was in the off-season. Luhnow did not make significant in-season acquisition in 2016.
He has to have someone else in mind. We have the prospects to get these deals done. Maybe he's waiting for teams to drop out, but it seems like every team is looking for relief help. Probably looking for someone with extra years of control.
Any chance Astros are after Osuna? Can he even be traded while serving a suspension? I know he’s got serious baggage already but he’s 23 and still has great stuff.
I'd rather Seattle make it than Oakland, their playoff drought is so long it needs to finally end (even though they're in our division). But I think it will be Oakland. Anyway, with the Giles situation, Harris being crap, Perez (future starter) possibly not being ready yet, and our bullpen being one of the least clutch and blowing leads against good teams, standing pat is not an option if we really want to win. After struggling to win against the Yanks, Tribe, and Red Sox, they've only gotten better. Time to go after Realmuto and Conley!
Luhnow deserves a lot of credit for what he has done with the Astros. He is probably the best executive in baseball. Still I’m not giving him much credit for Verlander. He didn’t deal for him at the deadline, it took having Dallas K and the fans complaining AND we still almost didn’t get him at the waiver deadline. As for Cole, he deserves all the credit in the world for that.
Another difference was that JV was a deadline deal, and Cole was an offseason deal. It seems Luhnow (post-2015) is far more inclined to do trades during the offseason, and usually shies away from big splashes at the deadline(s).
Did I say ignore it? That’s clearly the biggest issue to consider for any team thinking about him as a trade option now or in the future.
Certain ones probably Just because the publications are not still high on Tate, it’s not a stretch to believe the Orioles like him better than our Armenteros/Martin types, and if the difference was we wouldn’t move one of our top 3 guys, im ok with that
