it isn't even that close to reliant stadium, park and walk-wise. and what about the tons of land that is already used for parking at reliant stadium? no offense, but financially, logistically, everything and anything - that idea is awful.
i wonder who holds that claim now? and i wonder who holds sharpstown mall's original claim as the largest air conditioned indoor facility? man, this city used to be cool, what with all their air conditioned facilities and such.
I'm getting pretty sick of it all, honestly. I want to keep it, but doing anything costs a small fortune, and the attempt to find a use that pays for itself sounds increasing like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. The only way we make logical use of the land is if we knock down the building.
on paper this sounds like perhaps the best and easiest solution. Thinking about it deeper what about structurally how this would take place?I am assuming there is some kind of ventilation system if there are hundreds of cars running inside at same time. So what is the need for covered parking at Reliant? Would the profits from the parking equal to the cost of the project and long term for that location? Seems like it might end up still costing money if it is just a glorified parking lot. Maybe make it some kind of main parking spot for city, and run a bunch of metros out of there and trains from there since rail line comes there already. Some kind of sooped up park and ride. As for me I think some shops with a structure the size of the football field built within with levels and shops.. modernized using A/C and basically a similar to galleria futuristic mall.. incorporate that super cool looking roof with a bunch of lights illuminated from within. Soft lighting and smooth lighting with that roof could be neat. I think the city needs to have the option of allowing gambling or some other specialized revenue producing plan. A gambling center with open and closed area gardens. A mall on washington concept perhaps. For jobs sake it could be torn down and we could all come together as a city to build some bad ass monument or area. I'm not even opposed to blatantly ripping off and building an exact replica of the eiffel tower and even a little larger with same concept of high end shops at the trocadero and a champs mars feel gardened out. It could be a beacon and a new symbol of Houston. It looks exactly like the eiffel tower but slightly bigger? So what? What a ripoff? So what the eiffel tower looks damn cool. A replica of the rialto bridge or houses of parliament aint going to cut it. Heck even a bradenberg gate would be whack. But a real deal eiffel tower would be tight as f**UCK. We could even bring jean michel jarre back to christen it with his techno and fireworks. git ir done bob lanier/mcnair! Btw there are tons of eiffel tower replicas but none that are bigger and exact replica. It would be awesome. It's time to either be bold and do something cool, or recognize that it needs to be something else. The dome has a special place in Houston history.. and this is our chance to perhaps put this place in Houston on the map again, and make the area special again/more special. It has always been special ,and right now is the most aseptically empty of at time for that place as it has ever had. Reliant is towing the line the with their ugly sister stinking up the joint. This is Houstons chance , but sadly I bet they do whatever is worst and blow it. This is Houston politics, and Houston city you are talking about. Anyone that pays taxes knows all about HCAD, and the fraud that is the city in general. good luck with that! So in short the project is screwed.
Yeah, and haven't we had these threads before? I know I've talked about going to Colt Stadium when the Dome was a big hole in the ground. The mosquitoes were so bad that I thought they would drain Dad and I dry. What was crazy? I loved it! Baseball... how can you not love it? I just wish I still had my Colt 45's cap. That stadium is somewhere in Mexico, if it still exists. It was taken apart and shipped there by whoever bought the thing after the completion of the Dome. I'd like to think it's still in use. Lots of memories. What to do with the Astrodome? I have no freakin' idea. The numbers being batted around are rediculous. Something tells me it isn't moving south of the border. ;-)-
385 million dollars? Taxpayers' money? Whatever is cheapest to just get rid of the damn thing. The only thing I would accept is it become a huge casino, and we know that ain't happening.
That would be AWESOME...and solve a lot of tax issues.....if they did it right, keep Texas money in TEXAS. DD
So, is that a bad thing? There are a lot of Baptists and "bible-belters" in Louisiana, why do they have casinos there?
i love the casino idea but would the nfl, ncaa, etc... allow a casino right next door to a venue? maybe casino games only no sports betting.
The reality of the situation is that, even if by some miracle we were to get gambling legalized on that small patch of land next to Reliant, it would be far more practical to everybody involved to build a new building rather than repurpose the Astrodome.
