Affirmative Action Is Going Down—And It’s A Good Thing Too Sorry, Harvard, but 'visual diversity'—having a campus that looks like a Benetton ad—isn't a compelling state interest. https://davidlat.substack.com/p/aff...wbbIs-tD8uKKIYyGp7BfFqu9_9-wbn_iylC64IIj-mgFQ
Tweet is simply pointing out one of the disadvantages of AfA based on race at some elite universities (there are different version of AfA - some for women, some for Asian, some for disabled, and so on). Simply basing admissions solely on 'merit' has its own set of fairness issues. Also, news alert: very few people will be able to qualify for elite universities, regardless of their race. One of the other disadvantages of AfA based on race at elite universities is resentment. Some individuals who are rejected may believe they should have been admitted (feeling entitled even) if not for AfA, without realizing that the statistics are not in anyone's favor at the individual level.
When they have done investigations into who gets into colleges because of lawsuits from Asian groups - they have found it's not blacks getting in and outcompeting Asians using diversity, but instead it's whites getting in through donations to the school. They are more mediocre white rich kids getting in but no one is making a big deal out of that, instead it's the black kids. So yes, it is racist to focus on the black kids when they aren't even the issue.
What makes Ivy league schools so desirable isn't really the education but the network you get to build while you are there. Legacy students are a big component of that. Would all the Asians students want to go to a school that had all Asian students that all missed less than 5 questions on their SAT. It would be like going to UT Dallas where Asians make the largest part of the student population by a large margin. There isn't a crazy party to be had.
less donations more legacy admissions. I don't think there's that many kids who gets into Ivey leagues purely through donations
