Out of curiosity, why do you guys still think Kobe is a superstar right now?

He plays poor defense, doesn't seem to get along with teammates, and despite all the veteran talent the Lakers have, they're not doing very well.

30 points, 5 reb, 5 assist, on 48% fg shooting.

    Get real.

In addition to Kobe, the Lakers have Nash, Howard, Gasol, and World Peace.

    And they're currently 16-21. That's the reality.

superstars are different from all starts. Its beyond production, it is about who can put people to seats who makes ticket prices go higher when they are in town. So sadly harden's production this year matches, but his popularity outside of houston okc has yet to hit that.
We are talking about the signature shoe guys. Kobe, lebron, cp3, dwade, etc

If you are really super star you better be able to take your team to the playoffs by yourself.

Therefore Irving doesn't make the cut. I think Howard isn't 100% but I would put him in top 5 when he gets there.

    Lebron
    Durant
    CP3
    Howard

There are alot of factors as to why the Lakers are 16-21....Kobe Bryant's individual play is probably one of the least.

No his defense has been all-world one of the worst in the league. So no, he hasn't been a superstar this year. He's been a superstar scorer, but not a superstar player.

Superstars in today's games must be CONSISTENT all-around players on both ends. Therefore, there are only 3: LBJ, Durant, and CP3.

Kobe, Oscar Robertson and Kareem all missed the playoffs at least once in their prime. If these guys aren't within "superstar" definition, then the definition needs to be changed.

A prime Kobe did take the Lakers to the playoffs by himself. Just b/c he didn't do it 1 year doesn't change the fact that he was able to do it in other years.

I generally agree with your definition of what is a superstar, but at the same time it's hard to say Kobe just considering this year with Dwight, Pau, and Nash on his team and a below .500 record fits your description of a superstar any more than James Harden does. Basicly I consider superstars to be league MVP candidates. This year specifically that makes Chris Paul, Kevin Durant, Lebron James. Then you can make arguements for Carmelo Anthony, James Harden, Kobe Bryant, Rajon Rondo, ect. But most of those players probably be deserved to be considered upper tier all stars, but not superstars this season. Obviously Kobe is debateable considering the stats he is putting up, but when you have that much talent on your team you can argue that he is taking too many of the shots and not putting in enough effort distributing the ball. Dwight Howard has definitely not had a superstar season to this point. Duncan is still a solid all star, but not a superstar at this point. Likewise with Dirk so far, and Wade, Tony Parker, Deron Williams, and a hand full of other players who could argueably deserve to start in an all star game, but won't realistically have a shot at being in the league MVP running.

Top players by all-star votes is as good a way to determine it as any, if we take superstar to mean high-profile, popular players. So:

    Kobe Bryant
    Lebron James
    Kevin Durant
    Carmelo Anthony
    Dwyane Wade
    Dwight Howard
    Rajon Rondo
    Chris Paul
    Jeremy Lin
    Blake Griffin

So was Kobe a superstar in 05? How about early next season when he scored 81 but hadn't made the playoffs "by himself" yet? Or did he become a superstar only after the 06 season?

"By himself" notion is just flawed. Even Kobe needed a healthy Odom and Phil Jackson to turn it around.

And how do we know that someone like CP3 can do it "by himself"? Is Tyson Chandler, David West or the Clippers supporting cast "by himself"? When has Durant shown that he could get there "by himself"?
I don't know that CP3 could carry some of the rosters that Kareem had to carry and failed.
