Buddy of mine wants to buy a Mac, not sure why. Anyways, you can find cheap PC's everywhere, but I can't find any deals on Macs. Are they out there and is there a good site?

What is the incentive for Apple to have aggressive computer pricing?

MACs are way better. I dont know about coupons, their products sell too well.

At least he wont have to dump his Mac after 2 years because of virus infestations.

Then why does the Apple Store sell Intego?
    Intego

    Overview

While the Macintosh is privileged compared to Windows in terms of viruses, there is still the danger of existing viruses or new viruses spreading to your Mac and damaging your files.

Intego VirusBarrier X5 offers thorough protection against viruses and malware of all types, coming from infected files or applications, whether on CD-ROMs, DVDs or other removable media, or in files downloaded over the Internet or other types of networks.

VirusBarrier constantly examines all the files that your computer reads and writes, as well as watches for suspicious activity that may be the sign of viruses acting on applications or other files. With VirusBarrier X5 on your computer, you can rest assured that your Macintosh has the best protection available against viruses of all kinds.

It also works in the background and checks everything that your Mac does, looking for viruses. It knows the unique signatures of all known Macintosh viruses, and whenever a new virus is discovered, Intego's Virus Monitoring Center goes into action to provide updated virus definitions, which you can download using Intego NetUpdate.

When you purchase VirusBarrier X5, you have access to virus definition updates for one year from the date of installation. After that you can purchase additional subscriptions to extend your access to virus definition updates

Apple Macintoshes Targeted by p*rn-Based Computer Virus

SAN FRANCISCO — In a backhanded compliment to Apple Inc., online criminals are apparently so impressed with its scorching sales they are sending Macintosh computers an attack typically aimed at machines running Microsoft Corp.'s dominant Windows operating system.

Symantec Corp. researchers said the Web sites serving up the new attack also deploy a Windows version.

"For a while Mac users have enjoyed the benefits of being a small enough population that hackers didn't go after them directly — that's obviously now changing," said Ben Greenbaum, senior research manager at Symantec Security Response.

Lynn Fox, an Apple spokeswoman, said the Cupertino-based company knows about the threat and urges Mac users to be careful about where they download things from.

"Apple has a great track record for keeping Mac OS X users secure, and as always, we encourage people to install software only from trusted sources," she said in a statement.

Online p*rn-hunters are the intended victim of the latest ploy, in which visitors to certain explicit Web sites are led to believe they're downloading a free video player when in fact they're installing malicious code onto their Macs.

Once the user authorizes the transaction, the fraudsters can redirect his future browsing to fraudulent Web sites and possibly to steal his information or passwords or simply send ads for other pornographic Web sites and rake in advertising dollars.

For example, a person using an infected computer may think he is going to online auctioneer eBay Inc. or its PayPal electronic payment division but actually be directed to a site that looks legitimate but exists to purloin personal information.

The attack does not target a vulnerability in the Macintosh operating system.

Instead, it requires a user to approve the download, then enter his computer's administrator's password to continue, operations that raise red flags among sophisticated computer users.

Symantec researchers said the Trojan used in the attack is a rejiggered version of one that's been around for a couple years and requires that victims fall for a social engineering trick to work.

Security researchers at Intego, which makes Macintosh antivirus software and discovered the scheme this week, said it underscores the mounting threats to Mac users as the machines grow in popularity.

Windows machines still dominate the PC market, but Apple, which for years commanded just 2 to 3 percent of the U.S. market, has now grown to command an 8 percent chunk, according to market researcher Gartner Inc.

"This is the first really malicious criminal malware [for Macs]," said Intego spokesman Peter James. "We've seen some proof-of-concept malware, we've seen some worms, but this is different."

    Apple Releases Security Updates
    added July 1, 2008 at 09:30 am

Apple has released Mac OS X v10.5.4, Security Update 2008-004, and Safari 3.1.2 for Mac OS X 10.4.11 to address multiple vulnerabilities. These vulnerabilities affect a number of applications. These vulnerabilities may allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code, bypass security restrictions, or cause a denial-of-service condition.

US-CERT encourages users to review Apple Article HT2163 and HT2165 and apply any necessary updates.

Next time you dump your computer due to a virus infestation, let me know. I'll be happy to take it off your hands. :D And coupons don't necessarily have anything to do with how well computers sell. At least 6 or 7 other companies sold more laptops than Apple the first quarter of this year and you can find discounts galore on those.

To the OP, I don't know about any substantial discounts... they may exist, but if he's a student, he's got a better shot at discounts.

Only place that'll have any 'discounts' on Macs would be Mac Mall.

    http://macmall.com/

Other than that, their pricing is about the same everywhere that sells macs.

    1. For paranoid windows users who convert to Mac
    2. Because there are some viruses that can affect a Mac. They are just not very common and are not as easy to install and spread.

Also, Mac OS is Unix based - there is no registry which is always the source of major problems in Windows OS. There are no stupid DLL files. No installers / uninstallers and things that permanently attach themselves to your system...

The poster that I was responding to made this comment:

At least he wont have to dump his Mac after 2 years because of virus infestations.

Your post doesn't support him, so I am puzzled why you are responding to my post. The information that you gave is what I already knew.

I already knew about Jobs and his time with NeXT and its base - background for the current Apple O/S.
    NeXT

    Where did I state otherwise?

I am aware that the underlying system for Unix, Mac OS X, Linux etc is different than that of the Windows family.

    Where did I state otherwise?

Attach directly to the O/S or make themselves a home somewhere in the file system? They have to make a home for themselves somewhere beyond RAM (used as a catchall term for all memory of that type), else turning the computer Off and then back On would eliminate the virus.

First ever virus for Mac OS X discovered
Experts at SophosLabs™, Sophos's global network of virus, spyware and spam analysis centers, have announced the discovery of the first virus for the Apple Mac OS X platform. The virus, named OSX/Leap-A (also known as OSX/Oompa-A) spreads via instant messaging systems.

The OSX/Leap-A worm spreads via the iChat instant messaging system, forwarding itself as a file called latestpics.tgz to contacts on the infected users' buddy list. When the latestpics.tgz archive file is opened on a computer it disguises its contents with a JPEG graphic icon in an attempt to fool people into thinking it is harmless.

The worm uses the text "oompa" as an infection marker in the resource forks of infected programs to prevent it from reinfecting the same files.

"Some owners of Mac computers have held the belief that Mac OS X is incapable of harboring computer viruses, but Leap-A will leave them shellshocked, as it shows that the malware threat on Mac OS X is real," said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant for Sophos. "Mac users shouldn't think it's okay to lie back and not worry about viruses."

Sophos customers have been automatically protected against the worm since 12:25 GMT, 16 February 2006.

"This is the first real virus for the Mac OS X platform," continued Cluley. "Apple Mac users need to be just as careful running unknown or unsolicited code on their computers as their friends and colleagues running Windows."

Sophos advises all computer users, whether running PCs or Macs, to practise safe computing and keep their anti-virus software updated.
    Is Leap-A a virus or a Trojan?

Some members of the Apple Macintosh community have claimed that OSX/Leap-A is a Trojan horse, and not a virus or worm, because it requires user interaction (the user has to receive a file via iChat, and manually choose to open and run the file contained inside).

However, this is not the definition of a Trojan horse.

A Trojan horse is a seemingly legitimate computer program that has been intentionally designed to disrupt and damage computer activity. Importantly, Trojan horses do not replicate or have any mechanism of spreading themselves. They have to be deliberately planted on a website, or accidentally shared with another user, or spammed out to email addresses. There is nothing inside a Trojan's code to distribute themselves further to other victims.

Trojan horses do not contain any code to distribute or spread themselves, viruses and worms do.

OSX/Leap-A is programmed to use the iChat instant messaging system to spread itself to other users. As such, it is comparable to an email or instant messaging worm on the Windows platform. Worms are a sub category of the group of malware known as viruses.

Therefore, it is correct to call OSX/Leap-A a virus or a worm. It is not correct to call OSX/Leap-A a Trojan horse.

Aren't Mac's for beginning computer users like kids? Never saw the appeal for using one if you are experienced using a computer already.

Apple products are just simple and easy to use.

You can get a nice student discount if you're enrolled in a college or university. I think the way it works is you can either get a free iPod with your Mac or you can get $200 off. I used the student discount when I got my MBP in 2006.

Macs use to have the design edge but now everyone has pretty good design. Any PC maker can make a cute little box and over charge for the pricing. But I rather have a bigger screen with faster processing than looks. I've had my dell laptop for 3 years with ZERO viruses infected. I got it on a $750 discount dell had. Just don't be stupid downloading every thing that pops up. hehe.
It's gonna be hard to find a coupon for Macs. My brother has a "hook up" but I'm not going to tell you. So basically I just wasted your time. Thanks.

That's pretty much your answer. One supplier vs several.

Many people think the Mac's worth the extra money. Others don't. But Apple decides the pricing.

Their current pricing model gives them about 8% of the market, and they seem pretty happy about that.
