Got a bottle of Michter’s US*1 the other weekend and really enjoyed it. Then grabbed a bottle of Woodford Reserve on a quick run and think I liked it just as much, especially given the $20 price difference.
Twin Liquors is having a bourbon sale this weekend, lots of good stuff at my location, went there out of the blue for other stuff but picked up a bottle of this for about 20% off: I had looked at it, and then one of the employees said "if you like rye whiskey..." And I said "I do, and I've never had anything bad that had that name on the label." And he laughed and agreed. Now I have to decide to either keep it for Thanksgiving or look up cocktail recipes in the near future.
Here's what I just bought for "Thanksgiving" next week...never had it, but I've heard nothing but interestingly good things:
Bought the Balcones Blue Corn Texas bourbon based on the recommendations here. Planning to try it tonight, thanks & cheers!
Proper to sit around a fire and sip, I'm imagining? eta: also I just looked up, and I would highly, highly recommend that Basil Hayden Dark Rye. Holy crap is that good, just drink it neat.
Just missed out on an EH Taylor Rye this morning. Was the 5th person in the store but only had 3 bottles. Picked up a 1792 Full Proof instead. Did finally get a bottle of Blanton's. My uncle is an exec-chef at a bar in Delaware. They got their yearly allocation of 3 bottles and he sent me 1. It was lovely. Lately, I've enjoyed Smoke Wagon and a super inexpensive Old Grandad. There's a lot more in the $25-$40 range that I would've thought and are very good. There's a new book out by Wright Thompson about the Van Winkle family.
What whiskey isnt? Its not a typical bourbon. Its one I enjoy in spurts here and there, rather than all night sipping.
Somewhere around Waco, Balcones has a dozen or so spirits that are all talked highly of, this looked like the most interesting. The blue corn is what you want if you just want an awesome bottle to sip.
I noticed a few bottles a couple of weeks ago with some other Balcones Brands and passed. I've been to two different specs and twin liquors to no avail this week. Will try the big Specs at he Domain tomorrow as now I am curious to abide.
Never had it. But there is a funny story about my dad unknowingly running up a 700 dollar bar tab because he liked the name (his grandpa name).
It is delicious. Can't say I've had anything quite like it before. Have the makings for some old fashioneds after dinner, but I wanted to go ahead and take it for a test drive.
The smokiness seems to build up on your tongue with each sip, pretty wild. Thumbs up from everyone so far.
Found a bottle and tried a few glasses last night. To sweet with Coke, reminded me of Myers Rum. Flavor is very interesting, will need to try with a cigar at some point.
$50 whiskey with COKE? Shame, that's why God invented Jack Daniels. Try this, we just made the Old Fashioned Texan: 1 part agave (or honey) simple syrup 5 parts Brimstone 2 dashes Angostura bitters lemon to taste, garnish with rind
