I was driving over the Goethals Bridge from Staten Island onto 95. The speed limit was 45 and I was about 50-55 and had to get to the left lane for the exit onto the turnpike coming down a steep slope.

A car passed me on the left and then I changed lanes. There was a cop car parked ahead - obvious speed trap. Car in front of me that had passed me zipped by. I checked my speed, still under 55 so I figured I was safe but started slowing anyway just in case. Car behind me honked and went around me to my right.

Guess who got pulled over for going 54 in a 45? Yup. Me.

I don't know if it's because people mistake me for being black or what. But I asked the cops why they didn't pull the other guys over and their response was - they weren't speeding like you were.

    WTF?

    They passed me!

Got pulled over with a friend once going 40 in a 30 there. He had the St. Johns sticker in the back of his car (cop stopped and looked at it before coming to his window) and the cop said slow down boys and have a nice one.

speeding is one thing, but slowing down in the left lane that causes people to pass you on the right is the true crime here.

Technically, from your account of the events, the cop was correct. They were speeding with more gusto than you were.

Were you in the lane next to the shoulder where the cop was? If so, isn't it the law to slow down below the speed limit when passing stopped emergency vehicles or else change lanes?

Varies state to state, I think. Texas has one of the stronger laws on this topic, as I understand it.

Maybe if you want to avoid getting tickets you shouldn't speed. Just a thought.

Cops can never pull over every speeder out there, so your points about the other drivers are irrelevant. You broke the law, you suffer the consequences.

I do love the mentality. Someone else was breaking the law more than you, so you feel you should be excused.
