Just heard it is official that Andy Pettite is opting out of his contract with the Yankees. It sounds like he is heading for retirement but he's been pretty flaky and I could see him playing for the Yankees or for Torre on the Dodgers. Given his flakiness I could see an outside chance of him deciding he wants to play at home in Houston. Any of y'all see a possibility for him coming back and would you like to see him back as a Stro?
personally i wouldn't like to see him in an astros uniform ever again. but if he does decide to come back home, i'd welcome him in. not like he would make the current rotation any worse.
It's been the headline on ESPN.com for many, many hours now. If you don't believe it, it wouldn't have been terribly hard to find out yourself.
Thank you for providing the link. Article says he has a standing offer of 16 million with the Yankees if he changes his mind. I still say he will play for the Yankees next year. He already said he would not sign with the Stros, it would be either the Yanks or retire. He will not retire and give up 16 mill.
He's going to retire, he was thinking of retiring after his astros contract so he will definitely do it now.
He won't retire. He's just playing the Clemens game and acting like he wants to retire to get more money. Pettite pretends to be the awe shucks good'ole boy, but he's a greedy SOB. He can go F himself.
He's stil burnt out from the year long grind so he's not thinking rationally. He's still on the top of his game and when he begins thinking of the extra houses, cars, farms, hookers, and HGH he can buy with an extra 16+ million he'll be back.
He's not going to get more than $16MM for another year. He has a standing offer at $16MM, but that's it. Everyone here last year insisted there's no way he'd ever decline a 2nd year option too.
Whoops sorry my bad on the lack of link and thanks Dharocks for providing one. I was only speculating that he might come back to the Stros and not that there was an article claiming he was considering that.
I had that same feeling too but as his playoff appearance showed he still has some game and you can never get enough good pitching.
Pettitte went to the 'Stros in '04 for less money than what the Yankees were offering, offered to stay with the 'Stros in '07 for less money that what the Yankees were offering, and in the time between pitched with a serious elbow injury in 2004, had one of the best seasons in Astros franchise history in 2005 (helping the team get to its first World Series), and overcame a horrid start to finish with a solid year in 2006. Speaking objectively, I really don't see what you guys have to be bitter about. Not that fans are always objective
