For those who think Andersen was a role player because he only played 20 min per game in Euroleague remember they have a shorter game and different mentality when it comes to there rotations. Not saying he will be Scola but the man does have some credentials including a bunch of Titles:

Won the 2001 Euroleague with Virtus Bologna...won the 2006 and 2008 Euroleague with CSKA Moscow...named to the 2004-05 All-Euroleague First Team...named the 2004-05 Euroleague Week 14, 15 and 17 MVP...won the 2000-01 Italian National Championship with Virtus Bologna…won the 2003-04 Italian National Championship with Mens Sana Basket Siena…won the 2004-05, 2005-06, 2006-07 and 2007-08 Russian National Championship with CSKA Moscow…won the 2008-09 Spanish NAtional Championshp with FC Barcelona...won the 2001 and 2002 Italian National Cup with Virtus Bologna…won the 2005, 2006 and 2007 Russian National Cup with CSKA Moscow…member of the Australian U-18 and U-22 National Team...played at the 1998 World U-18 Championship…played at the 2001 World U-22 Championship…member of the Australian National Team…played at the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games…won the gold medal at the 2005 and 2007 Oceania Championship.

We haven't seen him a single solitary NBA game yet, how could you possibly ask this question? lol

I don't know if Anderson is going to have to wait like Brooks, and to a lesser extent, Scola. When they came to the team there were other viable options at their positions (Alston, Landry/Hayes) that cut into their playing time. Unless there is another significant move to bolster the center position, I don't see how Adelman can afford to limit Anderson's minutes too much.

Even if Dorsey can contribute, he's still 6'7" on a good day (although he has a nice wingspan), and he's likely still a fouling machine against legit competition.

You guys seem to know an awful lot about a guy you've only seen in YouTube highlights. Why don't we just hold off judgment on the guy until he gets on the court in Rocket Red. Besides, it's not his job to be better than Luis Scola. It's his job to be a good player and to help fill the huge gap left by Yao (pun intended).

I love scola, but how hard is it to be BETTER than Scola. Please. Anderson has length, and soft jumper and can hit 3s.......When was the last time you saw Scola hit a 3   :p :)

andersen, like scola, is a proven veteran and a winner. the difference is that scola plays with more toughness, hustle and has more moves on offense. andersen is a better shooter (more range) and he's a little bit more gifted as an athlete (6'11 and more athletic), though.

in scola's best individual season in the euroleague he averaged about 15 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 2 apg, 1.5 spg and 0.5 bpg while playing 29 mpg.

anderson averaged about 15 ppg, 7.5 rpg, 1 apg, 1 spg and 0.5 bpg while playing 28 mpg in his best season in the euroleague.

the difference is scola played on this level almost every year while andersen played on a better team and didn't see as many minutes.

summary: i think a reasonable expectation for andersen is to be on the same level as marc gasol or luis scola in their rookie seasons. that means he'll have a little trouble adjusting to the rules and the athleticism in the nba, especially on the defensive end. he should still be able to play about 20 - 25 mpg and average 10 ppg and 7 rpg.

and btw don't expect andersen to be a dirk nowitzki type of player. andersen is a legit post player and his turnaround jumpshot is money. he has the shooting range to make the european 3pt shot but i doubt we'll see him shoot many 3s in the nba. he'll be a good midrange shooter, though, just like scola. adelman will love it. :)

Thanks for the insight! If Anderson manages that this year, and doesn't kill us on defense (becomes an OK team defender, which would be better than my expectations, lol), then I'll be thrilled.

Why is there a need to compare them? We have gotten Andersen for some cover at the center position, we are paying him a small salary... if he can contribute to the rotation then I say its a good deal. Why does he need to be better than Scola? of course he isn't, Scola has had two years to get used to the NBA.

Oh and I wish those with no idea about the Euro game(including those that seem to always think Argentina is in Europe) would stop using his stats and MPG to say it means he isn't a good player. He played for two of the biggest clubs in Europe, clubs that would win games if they were NBA teams, in fact they did in pre season games. Add to that they play shorter minutes and rotate players far more than any NBA team does outside of Golden State. It is not unusual for players to start one game and not the next, even Childress comes off the bench sometimes and he was a handy NBA player.

    me too!

My concerns with this pickup were that he might be a poor defender AND rebounder. If he can rebound as well as Scola he's a steal!

Unless Andersen has stepped into the real NBA game, let's put this comparison off for the meantime. :p

WRONG. Scola was NEVER Euroleague MVP. That's a myth that Rockets fans have made up.

Offensive monster?! Andersen averaged 11 ppg last season, decent numbers but Scola is way more crafty and was MVP of SL.

Here is the question, how does our frontline of Scola/Anderson/Battier
    stand up against the following?
    Gasol/Dum/Artest
    Rahseed/Pierce/Garnett
    Duncan/Richard Jefferson/whoever
    Dirk/Marion/whoever
    Amare/Lopez/whoever

Even the Clippers will give us trouble w/Griffin/Camby/Kaman

We have a slow non athletic front court that will get murdered in the post on defense. Don't get confused by their ability to shoot a jumper, live by the jumper die by the jumper. We need a post up presence to make it happen and I don't see it.

Why does it always have to be "WHO'S BETTER_____________ or _____________".

Why can't they just be good in their own way and contribute to a winning team?

This guy anderson will have ups and downs, but the best thing is he will have a year of experience with this team when/if (hopefully) yao comes back in a year. then we will have a legit 1 - 2 punch at the center position.

Man you guys are very bored this summer. Does it really matter who is better when they are playing on the same team? I mean come on!!! Our GM is doing his best to put a good, competitive product on the floor next season. We all know we will not be a contender next year, we will try to make the playoffs. That will be the goal. We know going in we will be without Yao (if he is able to play late next season we will call that a miracle) and without T-Mac until January (anything earlier will be a bonus) so we should not be expecting a great first half of the season. We will be relying on our role players to step up and be more productive than usual. We will need Battier to step it up, Brooks, Lowry, Scola, and Ariza to bring it a lot more often next year. Whatever we get from Andersen will be a bonus. We should not be expecting him to come in and average a double double his first year in the NBA, that would be unfair. Whatever we accomplish next year will truely be a team effort.

There's a reason Andersen wasn't the first big man that the Rockets targeted/discussed. Also the Spurs only gave up Scola because they couldn't pay his buyout to TAU Vitoria and Poppovich was apparently pretty upset about this. I'm not sure that was the case with the Hawks and Andersen.
