Yep. People are talking about them fighting for a playoff spot, yet they are just one game back of the Rockets. Then people talk about how poor their defense is, but probably haven't run the defensive numbers since the Rondo trade.

This guy is going to go to the Mavs at the vet's min and take minutes from Greg Smith and Dwight Powell. This has to be considered a good thing for them. We shouldn't be so quick to dismiss a team that is right there with the Rockets. Unless, of course, we're just dismissing the Rockets, too.

They finally got Erick Dampier 2.0. It's beautiful.

Wasn't Dampier supposed to be a good defender? (I mean, not that he was good at anything, but supposed to).

Dampier was OK actually. Nowhere near Yao of course. And Amare was near Yao for a year or two! Now Amare's not that athletic but his jump shot is OK, right? I shouldn't denigrate the players, just the Mavs!

The Mavs would be so good if it was 2008

Haha good luck with that. He will have his ocassional good game, but he's just not that good anymore. Glad they got him over JO who proved he can still play with the Warriors.

I really don't understand why so many people remember prime Amare and don't remember the Amare of the LAST FOUR YEARS who couldn't stay healthy and when he did play was mostly ineffective for one of the worst teams in the league. History suggests if you weren't very good in the last 4 years, you probably aren't going to magically be good again. History suggests athletic big men with knee, back, hand, and eye problems aren't going to turn it around at the age of 32.

At best he experiences a career renaissance and gives them 7 minutes of big man jump shooting off the bench but if they need more out of him, they are in trouble.

....seriously him going to Dallas doesn't bother me at all.

I think a lot of people are very aware of what Amar'e is at this stage of his career. They are considering that alongside the much lower expectations that come with the role he intends to fill on the Mavs, though. For every "he's not like he was in his prime" statement, there is an equally valid, "no ****, but he isn't being used as the cornerstone of a franchise anymore, either".

He is putting up 12 ppg and nearly 7 rpg in 24 minutes of game action, with a solid 19.74 PER, so let's not act like he has been ineffective. He's not a stud, but he hasn't been playing poorly.

And if you think that he brings big-man jump shooting to any team, then it is YOU that have obviously not paid attention to Amar'e lately. This season, over 70% of his shots have come within 5 feet and nearly 80% of his shots from in the paint.

    Look it up for yourself:

Health is a concern for him and the Mavs, but he was relatively healthy this season before seeing his minutes get ramped up. I don't think the guy has 30 minute games in his legs anymore, but he is coming in to take minutes from Greg Smith, Bernard James, and Dwight Powell, so, at ~18 minutes per game, he is an obvious upgrade. Long gone are the days where Amar'e could potentially alter the course of a franchise, but he can still improve some teams. The Mavs are only one game back of the Rockets. It is naive to dismiss them or the fact that this signing helps them.

LOL we agree on this one. I think is an underrated move and he will be a valuable contributor to Dallas this season barring health issues.

People bashing the move are thinking about Amare in relation to the player he used to be instead of Amare in relation to the players he will be taking minutes from.

Amare is still a good player to have on your team as long as you aren't counting on him to be one of your best players. As a scoring threat off the bench who can come in for short bursts and go to work against the other team's bigs? He's a valuable role player.

To say nothing of his innovative "core dump" defense.

Uh oh. He's not looking as washed up as some of us expected. He can still be active on the boards and jump. Not good for the Rockets...

He doesn't play defense , he's never played defense.

He will help some on offense, and give it back on D. He's really an insignificant addition in the grand scheme.
