Rich Lord just now on 610 AM: " "Someone" online mentioned its the 15th anniversary of [Choke City]" HMMM...I wonder what source he got THAT information from?
Check this out, Rockets down 2-1, Aaron Brooks scored 34 points to an improbable victory. http://www.chron.com/sports/photogallery/IMPROBABLE_HOUSTON_SPORTS_VICTORIES.html#_self 15 years ago, May 13, 1994: After losing the first two games of the Western Conference finals, including the infamous "Choke City" game in Game 2, the Rockets rebound at Phoenix with a 118-102 win over the Suns. Vernon Maxwell has 31 of his 34 points in the second half for the Rockets, who eventually win the series 4-3 en route to their first NBA title. 34.
Matt Jackson responded should we get Maxwell out of jail to put 38 on the Lakers to commemorate. And they said Maxwell helped the first year and also helped the 2nd year too by leaving... not much of a shout out. Much of the usual backhanded compliments
Wow, I didn't know this kind of choking was hereditary. Its hard to believe that the legendary Dream would allow his team to blow away 18 and 20 pt leads in playoff games, and one in the 4th quarter, no less.
those were roller coaster games, not for the weak hearted. keep in mind, the city of Houston was fresh of the supreme choke job of the Oilers in Buffalo. People in Houston were burning their Oilers gear on the street. Then the Rockets blow these games dramatically, the morale was low amongst the fans. I would say that was rock bottom. Basically it felt like the Utah choke job in game 7, but worse since we had a huge lead. anyway, you have to walk through the darkness to see the light. 95 was even more gut wrenching. I believe if the new Rocket fans of today had to go through Clutch City and Clutch City 2, they'd need to go see the doctor for anti-depressants. It was not for the weak.
Regardless of what this team does; I think they showed great character against the Lakers in game 4. Tonight was a major letdown, but what did you expect with 3 of our top 10 players out with injuries? Let's make this a one game series by winning game 6! Can we win? Yes! Will we win - I don't know? If he league doesn't interfere, I like our chances, the bottom line is we've got to win in H-town. Go Rox!
well, it's time to pull out that Rudy T "when backed in the corner, the tough guy comes out swinging" while facing elimination speech
Ok so this is the perfect time for the Chron to do their thing. Another tombstone. Cursed City, a rocket blowing up mid-take off, whatever it is, get it done.
I hope Artest gets out of his shooting slump. he can watch that game where Maxwell drops 50 points on the Cavs
Also if he'd just posterize Vujachic & get him out of his head. I've never seen so many turnovers from a 1on1 battle.
Deja Vu? Rockets winning a game 7 on the opponent's home court? almost 14 years ago (May 20, 1995) Everybody expected Mario Elie to throw the ball to Hakeem Olajuwon, but Elie had a feeling he was going to be the one to kiss the Phoenix Suns goodbye. With the score tied at 110 late in Game 7 of the 1995 Western Conference Semifinals, Robert Horry spotted Elie across the floor in perfect position to get the ball to Olajuwon. "Dream was wide-open, but I had my feet set. I let it go and it felt good," Elie said. As his shot swished through the net, he ran toward the Suns' bench and blew a kiss to let them know the game was over. The Rockets won 115-114. Pictured above, Mario Elie, and LARRY SMITH
