smart of them to start a US tv channel -- the media manipulates the public's opinions, so they better get a seat at the table and start their efforts.
Lmao at known bigot and islamophobe ATW trying to associate anything even remotely related to Islam or Arabia with terrorism. And you say you don't have a problem with all Muslims or even a minority of them.
AlJazeera seems to have much more serious news than say ABC. ABC Nightly News has about one or two at the most hard news stories per night. Obama says this: the GOP says that. They always have an extreme weather story every night, a hundred year flood, the worst forest fires in two hundred years, the worst drought in over 100 years. Only once or twice a year do they suggest it could be climate change. They always have a feel good story like an American soldier took home an Afghan orphan or even a stray dog and several hundred thousand dollars of surgery was donated to help him walk again. Nothing about what caused it or whether we should be there at all. One of the Kardashian/Hiltons' Royal Babies was born. Perhaps a story about a lottery winner. A story such as the GOP say the earth is flat, scientists say it is sort of round etc. The remaining third of the 30 minutes is devoted to ads for Depends diapers, bladder control meds, Viagra or Cialis, reverse mortgages or other senior oriented products. FRANKY I AM SORRY TO SEE CURRENT TV CHANGE HANDS AS I MISS THE YOUNG TURKS AND VIEWPOINT W. JOHN FUGELSANG.
Where did he associate "anything remotely related to Islam or Arabia with terrorism"? I get that you've got a grudge against the man, but you can't just dream up stuff you claim he said when he didn't say it here. The level of personal insults flying around the D&D really needs to stop. It's out of control.
This is a good thing. What few articles I've read of theirs always seem insightful and informative from a different perspective. The pro US aka corporate media has grown tiresome with its often lack of depth.
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/08/21/business/media/al-jazeera-makes-its-american-debut.html No Al Jazeera for U-Verse either. I'm actually annoyed at Al Jazeera now. The website which I could use and watch Al Jazeera English videos on is now blocked because of my US IP address. TV providers told AJ to do it, and they bowed down to them. For someone who rarely watches TV and prefers online watching, this sucks. I'll have to sign up for a proxy now.
cnn is about the closest you can find to an actual news source. FOX news and MSNBC are not news channels, but rather opinionated political entertainment shows. Keith Olbermann is no better than Sean Hannity, and vice versa. whatever one's preference is in how they get what they perceive to be is news, this is a good thing. it's always a good thing to get another perspective to those who want to be truly informed. those who don't, well they've already made up their mind in what they want to hear and how they want their propaganda delivered.
I like al-jazeera. Way better reporting/information/analysis than any US station. For those complaining about it's ownership and potential bias....you must be kidding. US news is some of the most biased ever. And not just biased, stupid biased. Just partisan malarkey meant to keep anyone from critically thinking about actual, tangible issues. Just for kicks, the second largest owner of NewsCorp after Murdoch is Saudi prince Alwaleed bin Talal.
Makes thumbs' indignation rather humorous. Of course, it's not like facts have ever stopped that particular crowd from lashing out though.
I think it raises a legitimate question, though, how much influence do the shareholders have on the program, and how to control that? It wasn't just thumbs, it was me, too. The recent "fake patient" on Al-Jazeera, and Qatar's close links to the Muslim Brotherhood legitimately raise questions.
bin Talal has boasted in the past that he has influence. Thumbs wanted to cancel his cable without penalty, apparently thinking the addition of AJA was a "breach of contract". LMAO Come on...you can't seriously be advocating it's any worse than US news - do we really need to get into a pissing match of who had the most egregious bull**** story? Similarly, US news' close ties to the US government (understatement) should make any rational person question it in exactly the same way. Greenwald has many an excellent article on this phenomenon (and double standard).
That's how I feel about US news in general. Commercials, heavily compressed audio, sound effects, sensationalism, etc. In Israel, I can get Al-Jazeera (Arabic only though), DW (German only), BBC, CCTV5, France24 (English or French), or Sky News, all of which are better (despite Sky being Murdoch-owned, nothing like Fox News) and don't show commercials at all. I usually flip between them. I'd probably just watch DW but my German isnt quite good enough so I have to concentrate really hard to understand it. When I watch Fox, MSNBC or any other US news source, they show promos of the network in lieu of commericals which are repetitive and might even be more annoying.
I also think the AT&T fuss over Al-Jazeera is bit much when you consider you get programming from Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Syria, etc with basic cable in Israel
I used to watch some CNN, but it is getting worse and worse with just talking heads on shows like Piers Morgan Anderson Cooper etc, instead more real news, and don't get me started on 24/7 none stop coverage of murder or kidnapping cases. Hardly any report of world news, financial news etc. CNN international is much better I think.
To be fair, I don't watch US news much. When I was living in Houston, I found it odd that the local news stations basically only brought local news stories. I used to like CNN. But the question is to whom the ties are. I guess everyone will have some kind of bias, but is the link too close to a Western government or to people like the Muslim Brotherhood? The link shouldn't be too close to anyone, but it makes a difference to whom it is.
oh no, I agree 100%. that's why I said it's about the closest you can get by means of mainstream media. still though, leaps and bounds better than the aforementioned 2.
Bush-league move by AT&T to drop at the 12th hour. I would much like to understand the reasoning beyond the 'contract dispute' rationalization. What part of the contract is the problem? The money, or something else?
