A relative of mine with Turkish relatives on his other side, warned me as this was going on, that this was nothing but Erdogan trying to establish a dictatorship. Basically called it a false coup, and worried that this would do nothing but inflame his powers. He was dead on. Before the sun even came up. This is how smart Turks feel. They realize what's going on, but they're being held back by the poor, which Erdogan caters to, in order to keep some undying support.
It's amazing how we all were basically coasting along thinking dictatorships were mostly a thing of the past, outside a few really fringe cases. Remember when it was the Axis of Evil? What an innocent time. Turkey is a major player, and Russia's become much more authoritarian in the last many years. And more so-called democracies are running proto-fascist sounding candidates who cater to emotional, low-info voters. Hope there is a rally of common sense or at least calm.

Kings, Emperors , Dictators, Popes... it's really the most natural condition. People tend to fall in line with and want to be allied with the strongest power from greed and self-preservation. Altruism and collaborative government are the exception.

Based on what I know about internal Turkish politics, there are factions in the military and other branches of government who have not relinquished power yet. But you're saying he's already there, I'm saying he's almost there. I just don't think he will be able to hold it for any significant amount of time. Less than a month I'd wager. He will never release power willingly, that's why I said he's going to be killed. SOP for countries with bases. His sheeple will go ape **** and it will be on. I disagree with your last statement though. Dictatorships are wonderful for capitalism and economic metrics associated with capitalism, I know of a sparkling example. Makes economic planning sharp and easy, and for markets it's awesome because then you have a consistent pure philosophy governing it without the hassle of listening to the diverse minded population. Not condoning, just describing.
Also Turkey is not going to have a holocaust of 11 million people based on racial purity, and it also won't be brought back from the dead by the higher powers afterwards. Minor details I guess.
Sadly, the people in dictatorships are feeling more and more equivalent to everyone else in their freedoms. This tide of authoritarianism is really damaging to the overall human condition.

It is totally crazy. No way a coup attempt has 50,000 conspirators, including hundreds of professors and judges, etc. The Nazis arrested fewer people than that after the briefcase bomb nearly killed him in the summer of 1944.

What dictatorship is an economic powerhouse? They are almost all catastrophe's of economics outside of oil revenue. Syria, Libya, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Iran, N.Korea, Venezuela, Cuba. And nearly all states become more economically prosperous after dumping their dictator and moving to be more open: Russia, China have grown economically from opening up, not clamping down.
