Not necessarily accurate on your definition. In practice, the definition that is most accurate is "discriminatory or abusive behavior towards members of another race". This is the way it is understood to be used in the US.

It didn't "maybe" help him get a foot in the door, it did. For every Jayson Blair there are thousands of whites who've gotten the free ride of having rich, connected relatives. I somehow doubt those are pissing you off as much as Jayson Blair though because we know how much more Jayson Blair represents honesty and hard work in the black community than George Bush represents it in the white community.

Manny, if you hate me or my opinions or my style or whatever so much, then put me on ignore. In fact, I request that you do.

no, it was an afterthought, I put in "to illustrate my folly" in one post because it was pretty obvious that that was what MR was trying to do, rather than seeking my approval, as for the previous post, I edited in the "most" reference because it strengthened my argument and I didn't see it at first.

    ...exposed...:(

So what are you recommending, socialism? Or should we let the market play its course. If more people rid themselves of the "slave syndrome" and thought harder about providing their own jobs through their own ideas and hardwork, there would be no problem, now would they? Companies that passed on what you called "highly qualified Collin Powell clones" would suffer with intense competion from these new start-up's filled with these hungry entreprenuers. They could make them suffer long-term by being on the "cutting edge." Right? ITS NOT HAPPENING becuase oppressors like yourself tell them they need AA to give them everything thy need in life. You stunt their growth by telling them the government needs to regulate others to provide for them. You hurt them more than a racist ever could. Racists should be angering blacks into wanting to provide for themselves and not running to the nearest Democrat to enact some legislation. You actually think that will ever solve anything?

Let them grow GDAMNIT and stop treating them like little babies.

I agree we should let the market play it's course for another 200 years and then get serious about any problems. Obviously I'm recommending socialism, entitlements, welfare, abortion, homocide bombings, death taxes, big government, and every other fun term that conservatives delight in codifying for political gain. I should have put you on ignore with that first personal attack of yours last week because my patience with your insults has obviously not been rewarded.

I don't get the 200 years comment. Is that a reference to how long blacks were enslaved?

Remind me how long hispanics were enslaved, who also receive AA.

    Timing,

I know that we will never see eye to eye on this and that is fine with me as I don't expect everyone in the world to think like me. And believe it or not, I do respect your opinion; however, I would like to clarify my stance on this issue as you did rope me back into this in talking to bama;) .

Let me first start off by asking some rhetorical questions:

    1) Does racism exist in this country? Answer: Yes
    2) Do minorities deserve every right to pursue jobs and opportunities like whites do? Answer: Yes
    3) Is affirmative action the way to achieve that? Answer: It would be, IMO, if the mentality would change (I'll explain that later)
    4) Is a person racist for thinking that AA is a flawed system? Answer: No

Now of course, in a perfect world, racism would not exist and everyone would be given a fair shake regardless of color, creed, national origin, sex, age, etc. However, it is not like that and sadly probably never will be. As I mentioned WAAAY back in this thread, the example of the white male who has a prison record getting a job over an equally qualified black male who has NO prison record is racist, IMO. The statistics I provided on crimes were merely to figure out why that happened. I know, I know, it doesn't mean it is right, but is it right that when 2 applicants for a job that have the same credentials, one does not get it over the other because the one who got it looks like Elle MacPherson? I know that I have heard that there have been studies done in which more attractive people get jobs over less attractive people. And sorry to disappoint some people here, but I am too tired to try to look for a link on that and I am not that good of a "googler" to begin with. The point of mentioning this is that there are always biases that are used by employers.

Now getting back to AA...my problem with AA is similar to Slim's but I will try to be less vitriolic than he was in relaying that message. There are some minorities who will feel that hard work means nothing because they can get a job simply because of the color of their skin. It is one thing if they actually are qualified to do the job and they perform like they should, but I think it is inevitable that you have people who "abuse" the system. They look at it like "Wow, I learned that hard work is not really that important." Not only does that hurt the minorities that are actually working their asses off to do a good job, but it puts companies/businesses in an awkward position because they would like to get rid of non-performers but they can't get rid of this guy because of his skin color and he might sue them for unlawful dismissal or whatever. If every minority had the ambition of Colin Powell then I would not even be typing this out, but it is like racism going away in that it will probably never happen.

The point is not to offer an alternative for AA as if I did have one, I certainly wouldn't be doing this right now! It is to clarify my feelings on it. I just think it is too easy to abuse, but I don't know how you stop that from happening.

One final thing that I find interesting is that bamaslammer who has revealed that one of his parents is Japanese is a minority. And he is someone against AA. I bet that there are many minorities out there who are against it because they are tired of the non-performers who are dragging the rest of them down. It is too bad that no one else will speak up about it other than bama, but that should be the true test, IMO. If there are minorities out there who feel that AA is not good, then let's hear why and also let's find out how many are against it.

This is all philosophical and is not intended to insult; if it does, then all I can say is that I am sorry.
