Fascinating article, and something I would be open to seeing fleshed our further: https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/pa...-zion-williamson-choose-where-wants-play-next
Then they have to abolish trades as well as most players are forced to move and uproot their homes and families.
then you would have no trade deadline and no pick trades and you would have no picks and then you would have to keep your picks
Maybe no NBA but Canadian Super League? I know somebody would be against it. Use amateur refs instead of Brothers and Foster.
ESPN bends over backwards to make sense of their ridiculous biases. It was the same bullshit with the "Abolish overtime rules in the NFL" articles after their anointed Pat Mahomes didn't get to touch the football in overtime.
This was an interesting read. I don't know if it's to the author's credit or detriment but I was left with more questions than answers on how that would work. I'd love to hear Morey's thoughts on this.
i absolutely love the idea. People say big markets will most likely win out (and I can foresee that definitely is an advantage) - but I'd imagine for many of the picks outside of the top 5-10, these players will be looking pretty heavily not only for the player development - but front office success and treatment of young players.
If it's for the good of player development, then how about reversing the draft process. Let all rookies sign a four year contract to any team like a free agent. The first team of the player cannot extend the contract. So everybody become free agents again. But the draft is about drafting free agents, not rookies. The draft would be so much more interesting and valuable because they would now be drafting proven players, instead of unproven potentials. Only undrafted free agents would be truly unrestricted. Big market teams would not have unfair advantages in attracting star free agents. I bet that Morey would not trade away his draft picks like potato chips in such system, and he would be great at the draft.
