Interesting. It seems to work very well despite mostly leaving the ball in the hands of guys who aren't really good playmakers. If they ran it for Harden once in a while, the extra attention on him might make the trailing screen even more of a surprise.

I also like how the different skillsets of Josh and D-Mo led to two completely different flavors on the same play. Josh more of a slashing threat, D-Mo a shooting threat or sealing for a post-up.

Two things I want to point out. First, I think Dwight needs work on how he sets his pick and then rolls off. He gets called for a lot of fouls. In the original video you will see how he leans into people and then has trouble cutting loose. Second, the pick always start a bit too far out and it is only initiated by Dwight when he is hanging out at the three point area, which gives it away (doesn't apply to DMO because he shoots 3's).

Now look at how Karl Malone runs it. He comes from the post and flash out quickly, sets the pick and poof! He's gone.

Yeah, Dwight looks really bad at setting picks.

I actually hate this play for this reason.

Running a pick and roll with Bev as the ball handler is a bad idea. His decision making isn't that good and when teams start going under the pick he can't just pull up off the dribble efficiently.

It's much more effective when Harden or Jason Terry run it.

Meh, very predictable pick n roll offense by Mchale.
Very easy to defend, especially in the playoffs

This is Kerrs beautiful offense. Watch it and compare it to ours.

Kerr is playing chess, Mchale is playing checkers.

We got a buffoon as a head coach... Smh

^ That play would be almost impossible to run with our squad. I saw 4 different penetrators/shooters and one big man; a combo we don't have.

The closest we could do is Bev/Harden/Brewer/Ariza/Dwight

How embarrassing, that several years into his tenure as a Head Coach...

It is big news and thread worthy that he has implemented ONE offensive play.

    Appreciate the kind words, y'all.

    :)

One of many ways, yeah. Most the the Rockets offense is still free-flowing, somewhat similar to what the Mavs do.

Thanks. They've actually added bunch of new stuff this year – both set plays and early offense wrinkles.
Considering that they brought in a bunch of new guys and reportedly spend most of training camp on their defense, I would expect them to get sharper offensively in the months to come.

    Pretty much this.

    UGK!

It's pretty much the only play that they run for Beverley by design and so far the results have been quite good, even with some teams taking advantage of Beverley's shortcomings.

Haha, no. It's just one fairly new play that they've gone to quite a bit recently. They don't run a ton of plays, relatively speaking, but this is just one of many plays out of their playbook.

First, great video and thread; thanks for posting.

2nd, D-Ho is really, really bad at setting picks- comically bad really. he sets them too high, doesn't hold his position, doesn't seal his man, and throws an elbow on almost every one- could get called for a foul every time.

the PnR is basketball 101, the post has to know when and where, how to seal his man, and how to hold the pick long enough for the guard to rub his man off the pick. which brings up...

3rd, Bev has no idea how to rub his man off the pick.

4th, i'd love to see this play w/ D-Mo and the Slovenian to be named later.

Stockton and Malone are obviously masters at the pick and roll but one thing to note from the video is these guys have the entire strong side of the court to themselves. The illegal defense rules of the 90s made it impossible to pack the paint like we see teams do today. Notice how the help is often too far away to meaningfully contest anything.

The success of the Warriors weave is more a product of their excellent shooters in Curry and Thompson than anything. The defense has to trap hard on Curry/Thompson up top because they are such deadly shooters. We wouldn't get nearly as many good looks running the same set. Kudos to Kerr for maximizing the talents of their guys.

Also of note, in that set against the Thunder, OKC switched every screen and bottled up the initial actions pretty well. GSW ended up with Barnes in the post, they scored but I think thats a good way to play against this type of heavy movement. I also wonder what a zone defense would look like against this set.

    Rockets don't run any plays.

They just ad-lib. When you ad-lib enough, some of the ad-libbing will start to look the same.
That's all that is happening here - nothing to see, move it along

Rockets ran this play last Saturday against the Dubs at 6:40 in 3Q.
That time -first, Dwight set a really awful pick (or should i say he just touched Curry's back) -second, Bev couldn't beat Curry off one on one or use D-Mo's pick either, and -third, Bev drove into the paint with not much SC left, where Bogut easily blocked his shot.
Unless we get a true ball handler or Dwight becomes a good rollman, this offense won't be complete. Nice to see we finally have set offense besides Harden's one on one tho.

Kind of reminded me of the song "Sho Nuff" by Tela. Similar laid-back beat.

    thx, HMMMHMM

I've noticed this, too. An elbow PnR to the wing (off of Horn's action) vs the more classic pnrs to the center.

People who are saying they hate this play with Bev (because the D can go under it) are not seeing all the options of a wing PnR. Watch how DMo (or Josh) trail the first pick as a secondary PnR option to the center. Getting a secondary pick from a trailing big is not an option unless you take the first pick wide.

see the :50 mark for the first use of the secondary PNR due to defense going under the first one. HMMMHMM shows several in a row. Bev loses his defender on the second pick.

If the D goes under on the first PNR, Bev is supposed to get a second PnR to the key, and the going-under-Defense is not there anymore, because Bev's original defender is out of position to deal with the second pick.

Good play call for Bev that can counter going under normal PNRs, imo.
