I didn't find it particularly fascinating or disturbing.

"And what if ...... and what if.... and what if....."

    yawn.

I disagree with Dr. Tyson. I think the 1% difference in a chimps and humans causes a threshold effect (concerning intelligence). If we were 2% different, that doesn't necessarily means we're twice as smart as chimps. Most humans are at least 1% different than each other genetically, and we're relatively the same (at least compared to chimps). It may not seem like it at times though.

Man, I have never seen a guy trying so hard to get laid, but I don't think it's going to work.

I'm more interested if there are aliens who would surpass in our other humanistic qualities(compassion, pity, self sacrifice, etc.).

Anyone else get annoyed when scientists constantly say stuff like "aliens are smarter than us" or "we were created by aliens who are smarter than us"? Geez man, is that how PhD's rationalize things like faith and being unable to find the missing link in evolution?

It's a silly hypothetical at its core.

A chimp is a pretty darned advanced lifeform relative to the majority of life on earth.

Perhaps instead of being 1% different than humanity, life on another planet is 1% different (and thus improved upon) from an amoeba.

If if if if if if if if if if if if

so you are annoyed by the assumption that a being which has traversed thousands of light years to reach Earth might be smarter than you?

Theoretically, if you can bend space, you can travel from point A to B in no time at all.

    that's an interesting question...

have they been here? most likely
did they stick around? meh? I would assume we are the New Orleans of the Universe, a fun place to visit but I would never want to live there.

You have also to consider space-time. Our own solar system is nowhere near where it was millions of years ago, as we are constantly flying through space.

But let's just say, in a relative way, it's in the same location so it's easier for aliens to find us. But let's say they came to Earth 2 billion years ago. Well, we weren't here nor was any other life. And let's say that advanced civilization was around for 400 million years and then blew themselves up or whatever... we finally came around to a sort of consciousness 2 billion years too late to have met them.

The chances of two civilizations growing up to the point of being aware of space and being able to travel it AND within the same general spacial vicinity of each other in the Universe AND within the same general time frame of the 14 billion year old Universe is astronomically small.
