He could go overseas and turn into a decent player and get paid decently, too. I'm surprised he isn't trying out this option. Guess he's just not an overseas guy. Cause he could get solid playing time, get paid well, experience a bit different world and professional basketball, and maintain the ability to return to the NBA...
How is this a smart move? Dude has been bouncing around a couple of years already and although he's "only" 23 every year a lot of players much younger than him go undrafted and head straight to DLeague. If he gets picked up next year on a 2 year minimum deal is that supposed to be a win for him? LOL. If he was an unknown player then yeah that's a good move but as someone who already got into an NBA roster and got cut, does he expect more than the minimum at this point? He's not even 7 foot so the big guy pemium doesn't apply to him. Maybe its just me but I don't think Covington and his agent thought it through, the minimum contract gives him financial security for the rest of his life (that's what, 4M total?) and then it expires exactly when Covington is about to hit his prime so he can increase his stock. As a big bonus, 76ers are tanking so he can get a lot of PT in NBA games instead of the dleague where 20 pt scorers are ignored. If he played his cards right, Covington could've been like Brian Cook or Novak and stick around the league for years, instead he turned it down and I have no idea why LOL. Maybe he idolizes Parsons and thinks he'll get the mid level from some team. Yeah good luck with that, I wouldn't be surprised if no team picks him up and he winds up playing in Europe.
It took one player, Parsons, to change the model. But just wait until one of those players who are"making a bet on themselves" to flame out and those 4 year contracts will be enticing again.
