Not Nook, but it’s gotta be strictly insurance. Going to create a roster crunch, especially since there’s no August trades now. It may be more likely they make a minor league signing of someone like Fedorowicz instead of trading for someone like Maldonado (who would have to be on the 25 man roster and hence might cost them someone like Kemp or White). If they did trade for a catcher, the list would probably consist of James McCann, Jonathan Lucroy, Pedro Severino, Josh Phegley, Tony Wolters, Maldonado, Tucker Barnhart, Jesus Sucre, Alex Avila, Nick Hundley, Jeff Mathis, and Yan Gomes. I wonder what it would take to get Danny Jansen, Carson Kelly, or Jorge Alfaro. I believe they all have options remaining which would eliminate the roster crunch, and all 3 of those guys are potential stars, although Jansen is struggling with the bat almost as bad as Stassi.
This is what I was getting at. I do not want a replay of last year. I will say I've always like Yan Gomes. Not sure why. Catcher is the one position I would trade for way early, like right now. Get him used to the staff and all. Do you mean "catcher" in that: a) he sits behind the plate with the gear on; or b) he is actually good at it
The Astros may get a catcher earlier. All I can say is that at the deadline the cost of a mediocre catcher usually isn't much and I think the Astros will try and get one. I know Stassi costs almost nothing, but he just isn't really up to snuff in my opinion.
I do like your McCann idea, do it Wednesday and let him walk across to his new clubhouse. Not sure why the Rockies would trade Wolters....
c) a guy that sits behind plate with gear on that is overall better than Stassi. I'd guess that limits the field to probably about 15-25 guys on non-contending team.
I'd settle for your top-5, 10 if you're generous (not named Yan Gomes, I got that one). I'm all for it manana...who are these catchers?

I will go with 5 catchers (not necessarily top 5) you probably would not like, but are better than Stassi..... Omar Navaez. He's a mess behind the plate, but can hit. Alfaro Lucroy old and busted, but Astros pitchers don't have an active dislike for the way he call games Maldonado (not sure he's better than Stassi, but wanted to place him here for comedic value) Hedges Can't hit, but can catch well.
You're killing me, smalls. Alfaro...hell yes. Narvaez? Interesting. Could Lucroy capture some magic on a playoff team? I don't think so. Might as well bring back Gattis instead of the others.
When is the last time Verlander has been caught by Stassi? I don't think JV likes Stassi calling games. I'd much rather have Lucroy than to piss off JV if Chirinos goes down.
9 starts last year, b/w McCann low and Maldonado high ERA. Chirinos has caught all of his so far this year, as he should. You can look at the pitcher by catcher splits on baseball reference, go to the pitcher splits, look at "by catcher"
I don't think Stassi has caught one of his games since Verlander was going off on him during a mound visit last year.
If you care you can look it up, or just look up. If not, then don't. I can't exactly smack you in the face with a sock full of facts.
Look them up for me and report. Don't really care thought because I'm sure Stassi would have never have caught Verlander again after he went off on him. The only reason they had to go with him was because McCann was hurt and they had no one else until Maldonado
