Not surprised they didn't pick Chirinos, but I am surprised they only picked one other catcher (McCann)
I saw what Cole said about Chirinos for the All-Star team and said there are a lot of players deserving (some injured and in the bullpen). Chirinos could still make it as someone who replaced an injured All-Star. I can see Cole liking this team so much he signs a contract with the Stros this winter.
I’m not old enough to really remember some of the late 90’s teams or some of the teams of the 80’s, but this has got to be the greatest 3-year run in franchise history. WS champs, 2 ALCS appearances, possibly 3 consecutive 100-win seasons, an MVP, 18 total All-Star selections and much more that can be accomplished still this season. Doesn’t get much better than this.
I sure hope so. Last winter he said that "this organization checks all the boxes" he's looking for or something like that. What I like about him the most is like JV, Cole is a great pitcher who is also a durable, innings-eating workhorse and gives you many quality innings, and typically goes deep into games (good for the pen, and also means not injury-prone). Those are very hard to find these days. Many good pitchers can't hold up as strong, and there are other inning eaters (like Shields and Leake) who can eat innings, but they aren't quality innings.

They could be very competitive with a 3 year deal. Its when teams come at him with a 6 year deal that he'll probably end up being enticed enough. I don't want the Astros to offer any free agent pitcher a 6 year deal, no matter how good they are now.
I’d be more than okay offering a 4 year deal and you could probably even talk me into being okay with a 5 year deal. 4/$110 mil would be about what I think he’d be offered. But like you said, a team might offer him in the range of 6/$150 mil and I’m not sure he could turn that down.
Cole/Boras wanted David Price type money. Even if they don't get that, no way they take less than Patrick Corbin's deal.
Every pitcher Boras has represented wants that sort of deal. I’m not so sure teams other than the dodgers or Yankees are considering long term deals for pitchers... and even those teams know the risks (they’re just willing to absorb them).
I believe the reason why the Yankees didn't land Corbin is because that sixth year made the difference. NY would only go up to 5 years, WAS offered 6 yr/$140M. Corbin has been up and down this year, and not quite as good as his career year last year. Wouldn't surprise me if after 3 or 4 years, the Nats try and trade away his contract. I'd be willing to go up to 5 yr/$125M for Cole, but we'll see what happens.
