Well, someone with a small UCL did turn down 3.1 million guaranteed as well as additional escalating offers that have been rumored to have been as high as 5 million. Baseball players believe in themselves. It is a good trait for a baseball player usually except in regards to some contract negotiations.
3-91: Tyler Ivey With their 3rd Round pick (91st overall), the Astros selected 6'4" 195lb RHP Tyler Ivey out of Grayson Community College in Denison, Texas. In 12 appearances for Grayson, Ivey threw 78IP with a 2.08 ERA and 122 strikeouts - 5th in all of the NJCAA and his 14.08 strikeouts per game ranked 2nd. Ivey, a former Aggie who transferred after his freshman season, had a 3.56 ERA for A&M in 2016. After A&M walked-off a win against UT in 2016, Ivey appeared to give the Horns-down gesture, and hilarity ensued. This is somewhat of a surprise pick as Ivey was not ranked by MLB.com and doesn't have a scouting profile of him. Baseball America ranked Ivey as the 125th-best RHP coming into the draft. He does have a 90-94mph fastball and a repertoire of four pitches.
Baseball America ranked Ivey as the 125th-best RHP coming into the draft. Astros must have had Ivey as the 91rst best RHP in the draft.
If Perez is not an underslot signee, I will consider it an awful pick. Surely Ivey is an underslot signee. We should have a better idea of what the plan is based on whether or not they draft a highly touted HS guy today.
Just out of curiosity, why would you consider it an awful pick? Perez is only 17 years old, and if the Astros took him that high, they must feel really strongly about his bat.
At this point it's just not fair at all to say that any pick is a dumb pick. If we've learned anything from player development we should know that you can't judge a pick until that player has spent at least a year in the minors and often times not even until you see what they become in the majors. For all we know at the moment, all of our picks so far could end up being all-stars or they could all end up being busts and never make it to Houston.
