There were some quotes attributed to Rick Smith and Bill O'Brien that I found interesting for how they were worded. They said that Watson was high on their board, and they were thrilled to have an opportunity to take him at #12, but they made no reference to him being #1 for the Texans or the player they were targeting all a long. At this point it doesn't really matter....... perhaps Watson was whom they wanted #1, maybe they preferred Mahomes (which is what Florio said on the radio in Chicago, that Houston was hoping to get him at #12, and that is why the Chiefs traded up) and maybe they preferred Trubinsky (supposedly a number of teams tried to trade into the top 5, and stopped after Trubinsky was drafted). Lets just hope that Watson is a long term solution at QB that is good enough to win high pressure playoff games.
Benjamin AllbrightVerified account @AllbrightNFL Post-Draft survey show most teams had Watson as the #3 QB on their boards, a couple even lower than that. No one, including Hou, had him #1.
I wonder if Albright's source is McClain's article about the Texans' drafting of Watson, which contained this strangely-worded passage?: While tipping my cap to you for posting the rumor, I still maintain that ranking Watson 2nd or even 3rd doesn't mean they didn't like him and settled. Both McClain and Breer's articles painted Smith as a young school girl with her first crush.
