Hector Perez, after coming on for Ryan Hartman: 4 IP, H, 2 BB, 5 K Now has 110 K (and 50 BB) in 86 innings this season between Buies Creek and Quad Cities.
New top 30 on MLB Pipeline Spoiler 1. Kyle Tucker 2. Forrest Whitley 3. Franklin Perez 4. D.J. Fisher 5. J.B. Bukauskas 6. Yordan Alvarez 7. Colin Moran 8. David Paulino 9. Teoscar Hernandez 10. 7-17 are pretty interchangeable. I think Nova could easily be the best position player in the system after Tucker, Fisher, and Alvarez.
From the Astros not only picking Joe Perez before Corbin Martin, but in paying him above slot & Corbin Martin below slot, It looks like MLB Pipeline did not get the memo that Joe Perez is a better prospect. Luhnow says the Astros value high swing-and-miss for pitchers and low swing-and-miss for hitters. Joe Perez struck out only four times in his senior year (he walked ten times). This was in Florida's best league and reputably one of the best in the nation. This, combined with the Astros' choosing Perez before Martin Corbin & paying him significantly above slot, has me thinking the Astros identified Corbin as having an elite bat to ball skill ceiling that is of more value than Martin's swing-and-miss.
I was down on both those picks on draft day but the (VERY) early returns on Martin are encouraging. And the bonus details indicate Perez was largely underrated.
After homering twice last night in his first game with Tri-City, Adrian Tovalin homered again today. Abraham Toro-Hernandez (6) and Mike Papierski (1) also homered for the ValleyCats, but they got blasted 11-3 by Vermont
Baby Stros could have had a 4-game AAA sweep against the baby Rangers yesterday, but we decided to channel the former Stros teams and go 1-12 with RISP. I really look forward to watching these games in RR, but with the Stros dugout on the proper side of the diamond.
I'm surprised the K numbers aren't higher for a guy in the low minors throwing ~100, but he's getting guys out.
Myles Straw went 2-2 for Buies Creek tonight; he tripled, hit an RBI single, scored twice, and stole two bases, which gives him 30 steals on the year.
