The Astros' 2nd-round pick is now #61 overall. Their estimated bonus pool has decreased slightly, to $5,943,102.
Wouldn't be surprised to see the Astros use some of their excess talent in the high minors to target a competitive balance pick. Turn some possible blocked Rule 5 candidates into younger prospects, and give us a little leeway with slot values.
They will try and have tried in the past... Part of the issue is that those picks are now more valued than even even a year ago, so they are getting harder to trade for.
Not sure there will be a clog next season as a few guys will either show they can replace guys leaving or have troubles in majors.
Astros going pitcher or catcher...I see the Astros probably moving one more spot up which would put them at 6+ million money available to spend. Basically 2 real good prospect and the rest junior or senior cillege players... ...but being stack in the farm system and moving forward, Astros will be just fine.
I'd be shocked to see Luhnow and co. take any approach other than "Best Player Available". Would a pitcher or catcher be nice? Sure, but I doubt we stray from the BPA approach.
Considering about half the guys drafted in first round will be pitchers or catchers, he's got about a 50-50 chance of being right...even though Astros will be picking best player available (factoring in signing costs into "available").
That's an incredibly silly thing to say this far out. Silly enough to render all of your other posts equally useless. You may be right, you may be wrong, but you have no idea at this point.
Astros don't know what they will target in the first round. A catcher would take several years at best to reach the big leaguers. The Astros are most likely going in house in 2017 or trading for a catcher.
I'm basically against using high round picks on catchers. The number of first round catchers that become average- above average catchers is incredibly low. Amazingly Jason Castro is one of the more successful recent first round catchers and most people would like to replace him. The Astros current shot-gun approach with mid-round picks and IFA's is perfectly fine by me. They're as likely to hit on a starting catcher that way as not. As for the 2016 draft, it's definitely BPA. The only glaring hole I see in the system is lefty starting pitchers and given volatility it's not worth reaching for one. Besides, not every system hole has to be filled in the draft.
Max Sapp Highly rated catchers tend to go very early, which makes hitting on one in the mid-late 1st round very difficult. Of course, it has been arguably the most difficult position in baseball to fill.
But wasn't he more of a Drayton/affordability signing, than a legit first round pick? Remember they had a pretty decent run of drafting the affordable guy... and by decent I mean worthless.
He was a slot signing (Selig's recommendation, not an actual thing). http://perfectgame.org/Articles/View.aspx?article=1304
I agree with you. Concerning starting pitching, they plan on being aggressive in the international draft. They do really well projecting young players based on athleticism etc. Elias and Oz Ocampo both are very good at their job and the Astros have some of the best young amateur scouts in baseball (they are well paid as well).
The pressure not only got to Harris, it got to Hinch also. Hopefully our manager learn from mistakes.
Bunch had questionable moves. Inserting scrub Perez in Fame 4 and leaving Harris out there too long when he look very nervous in the face, the moment got too big for him he forgot how to throw strikes,
