Stephen Anderson is going to make this team and fight Ryan Griffin for the starting TE spot in passing situations. He seems to have a knack for getting open and creating separation at the top of routes.

It’s pretty hot here

HOUSTON — I landed at the Houston airport late Saturday afternoon and got in a rental car. The temperature gauge on the dashboard was 99. It was 100 on Sunday. Forecast highs for the week, beginning today: 99, 99, 99, 100, 100.

Heat index (combining heat and humidity) on the field Sunday for the 9 a.m. practice: 120.

The medical staff here does proactive IVs. Before Sunday’s training-camp practice (2 hours, 35 minutes) on the fields across the street from the Texans’ stadium and locker room, team medics gave out 35 IVs to players, including DeAndre Hopkins. “Before I got here, I thought you got an IV when you had surgery and that was about it. Now we get them all the time.”

Coach Bill O’Brien works the team out two-thirds of the time outside, and one-third inside the Texans’ practice bubble, where it’s 72 degrees. That’s where the team will work this morning. “I think you make it through by determination,” said Hopkins. “I think it keeps guys true. You better treat your body right. Like, you can’t go out and do whatever at night, then expect to come in here the next day and practice outside and practice well. Your body will be dead.”

The Texans have equipment guys lugging those eight-packs of small bottles of Gatorade, not just squirts of water; Sunday, some players just grabbed a bottle on the sideline, wrestled it from its plastic coupling and inhaled it. It’s just incredible to stand out in such heat for two-plus hours and imagine players who have to try to make a football team in the oppressive conditions.

Other Houston notes:

•Re the strange story in New Jersey, where Darrelle Revis and Brandon Marshall fought at practice Friday, with Marshall reportedly taunting the great corner for getting burned by Hopkins (five catches, 118 yards, two touchdowns, including a 61-yard TD bomb) last season: “I was shocked when I heard,” Hopkins told me. “I guess it means I’m doing my job. I knew I’d beat him that day, because no one can cover me man-to-man. I think he’s a great corner. But he has trouble with quick guys and length.”

•Sunday was punter Shane Lechler’s 40th birthday. On Sunday night, O’Brien and players Vince Wilfork, Brian Cushing and Johnathan Joseph called Lechler to the front of the team auditorium, gave him a cake shaped like the number 40, and also got him a walker, some Rogaine, and those Steph Curry sneakers people think look old-fashioned. Then the teams sang him Happy Birthday. He’s coming off a season in which he avearged 47.3 yard per punt, fifth in the league, and no one here is trying to nudge him into retirement. In 16 seasons, the 47.3-yard average is better than any of his first six NFL seasons, and just two-tenths of a yard off his career average. Here’s how long he’s been around: Lechler’s had beers with Ken Stabler. “I’m not in any mood to start growing up,” he said.

•Too early to tell if J.J. Watt will play the opener. He’s 18 days out from back-disc surgery that is probably a seven-week rehab. “I wouldn’t bet against him,” O’Brien said, “but he’s not going to play ’til he’s ready. He knows that too, and he’s okay with it.”

Six camps, six interesting names

Continuing my section of roster-scanning the teams I saw in the past week for interesting old faces in new places:

Houston: Devon Still, defensive tackle. Still and his daughter, Leah, were an inspirational story in Cincinnati, with Leah beating cancer when her dad played for the Bengals. And here he is trying to prolong his NFL career. For now, Still is spelling the great J.J. Watt on the Houston defensive line, and if he has a good August, he’s expected to make the team as depth on a solid group.

My only concerns about him were about catching the ball, if he shows off good or even acceptable hands then we might have nailed that pick.

HOUSTON -- The Texans practiced inside on Monday to get away from the heat, and after a slow start by the offense, quarterback Brock Osweiler and his receivers got on the same page and finished practice with some nice connections.

1. Injury update: Outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney missed his second straight day of practice on Sunday. Coach Bill O’Brien said he was held out for “precautionary reasons,” and that his injury is “nothing that’s serious.” After his absence on Sunday, O’Brien said Clowney was just given a day off.

Center Nick Martin also missed his second consecutive practice, and Derek Newton (hamstring) and Christian Covington (concussion) continue to be sidelined. Running back Lamar Miller and receiver Braxton Miller both returned to practice after being held out on Sunday.

2. Midway through practice, a scuffle broke out between wide receiver Keith Mumphery and cornerback Robert Nelson. Both are guys who are fighting for a roster spot. Nelson threw a few punches at Mumphery’s helmet (including at least one that made solid contact) before the fight was quickly broken up.

3. First-round pick Will Fuller was all over the field in practice. He made a one-handed catch on the right side of the field on a huge throw from Osweiler. Osweiler noted how impressed he has been with the receiver.

“One of those things that a coach can’t teach is speed, and Will has a lot of speed,” Osweiler said. “Will did what he does. He got on the cornerback’s toes, broke to the post, and just ran. So, Will’s an extremely special football player, obviously has great speed. We all know that. It’s good to see some of that stuff finally come together.

4. Receiver Wendall Williams, an undrafted rookie out of the University of the Cumberlands, also showed his speed at practice today, especially while returning the ball. Osweiler said he was doing a drill on the sideline, and he turned his head and saw Williams taking a kickoff return and “it looked like he was going 100 miles per hour.”

IMO if it's "very close" you have to go with the young guy with a cannon for a leg over the guy who is turning 35 later this month who has been passed around 5 different teams already.

Trending Down:

Devon Still- The Texans are doing what they can to give Still the chance to make this team and start at defensive end. Still looks the part but he has not had the explosion off the line you would like to see for the position. There will be more to watch when he gets a chance at the San Francisco 49ers later this week but his early work leaves something to be desired.

Kevin Johnson- It has not been the start to camp that most wanted to see. Possibly shaking off the rust from all of the injuries he had over this off-season, Johnson just has not been consistent in coverage. Johnson has all the talent that you want in a cornerback but he is struggling to lock down receivers.

Cecil Shorts III- He is getting work on the field but he is not making the impression you would want a veteran to make. Shorts is not making the plays during practice
that you would expect from your veteran presence and he is not separating himself from the younger competition. He is still in the discussion to make the team but right now, Shorts appears to be backing into a roster spot.

Ka'imi Fairbairn- It might be a little harsh to have the rookie kicker on the list but after such a promising start, but he has struggled with consistency putting the ball through the goal posts. If he wants to take Nick Novak's job, he is going to have to pick it up soon.

<strong>Trending Up</strong>

Will Fuller V- For everything that has been said about Fuller and his deficiencies coming out of Notre Dame, those supposed shortcomings have not really been a factor for him early in camp. He has shown above average route running skills, solid catch ability, and the speed to run past defenders. He does have to get stronger against NFL defenders and keep them from pushing him around but that can be corrected over time.

Max Bullough- The Texans starting inside linebackers are pretty much set but Bullough gives the Texans a solid third option when needed. Considered one of the smartest defenders on the team, he shows a knack to read plays. A sure tackler and improving his coverage skills, Bullough has been a plus in camp.

Stephen Anderson- The rookie tight end not only has put himself in the discussion to make the 53-man roster but to possibly take important snaps during the regular season at this rate. The Texans are trying to figure out if Anderson can handle the expectations against proven NFL talent and he has answered the call. There is still a while to go to start the season, but Anderson is proving he will be here when week one kicks off.

Benardrick McKinney- There were signs last year when McKinney played good football late in the 2015 season. Now, McKinney has come back, focused and comfortable with his surroundings, especially the players around him in the defense. McKinney is a physical presence and has a good feel for offensive schemes. His biggest improvement has come from shedding blocks and tackling in space.

<strong>Other Notes</strong>

Tom Savage has been one of the more interesting players to watch this training camp and what he is doing this week started in OTAs and mini-camp. Savage has grown up in this offense and he has been the only holdover in the quarterback room the past three seasons. It is paying off for Savage and the Texans, his ability to run the offense and help install the offense to help new players. He has thrown the ball with confidence and given the team a clear track to name him the back-up quarterback for the upcoming season. There are places for quarterbacks like Savage in the NFL and there are plenty of unknowns on him. What he is doing on the practice field has been an early positive for the offense.

The Texans are doing everything they can to push Jadeveon Clowney this training camp to get his ready for the season. The reason for Clowney getting some work on special teams? To keep him in shape and there are times when the defense might have to stay out on the field when the other team punts. So, there is a knowledge he needs to help just in case, but it will not be on every special teams play situation for him.

Yes, Reshard Cliett has been on the field for the Texans but after day two, he has not been back on it. He is coming off an ACL tear last season and, during OTAs, it was clear he was just trying to get the knee to respond. The Texans will never rush players back to the field, and after two days of work, they will concentrate on getting him back healthy. It might be a little while before Cliett sees the field but they do like what he brings to the team.

If there is one thing this coaching staff does well, it is tailor the offense to what their quarterbacks do well with the football. Brock Osweiler has had enough time in the NFL to function in this offense but the concern should be with the younger players on offense and how they transition to the league. Will Fuller V, Braxton Miller, Tyler Ervin, and Stephen Anderson all appear to be on track to help the Texans offense this season and getting them ready for week one will be something to watch. Osweiler will only be as good as the players around him, he is going to have gain confidence in more players beside DeAndre Hopkins, Lamar Miller, and Jaelen Strong.

Off the top of my head, the Texans have some strong, young talent in the locker room and could be the best group in a long time to be in Houston. When you talk about youth and potential, teams like Jacksonville and Oakland are easily in the discussion for teams with young talent to watch. Questions like these are always debatable but I would put the Texans under those two teams.

Monday Observations from Harris:

1. Okay, so my stretching/music playlist theory went up in smoke today when running back Akeem Huntstarted getting his groove going to some country music. Not a country music fan myself, I can’t tell you who was singing what, but it didn’t matter to Hunt, who let loose as the team broke to individual periods.

2. Inside linebacker Akeem Dent delivered a few messages during blitz pickup period to some young fullbacks and running backs. He won his fair share, as the veteran should.

3. The only back to stunt Dent’s progress to the quarterback (and by quarterback I mean a big, tall red dummy) was Alfred Blue.

4. Speaking of Blue, we talked with general manager Rick Smith today (which we do daily on Texans Training Camp Live at 8:45 am on SportsRadio 610) and he mentioned the work that Blue did to get himself ready for the 2016 season. The end to the 2015 season showed that Blue had the potential to be a fit for this team for a while. He can do the dirty work things that most running backs won’t do or can’t do...for example, blitz pickup. I think he’s going to surprise fans when they get to see him this preseason.

5. I can only imagine what it’s like to run smack dab into fullback Jay Prosch, but most defenders that do don’t have much success. In blitz pickup drill, Prosch hammered one of the rookie linebackers and completely stoned him in his tracks. The dummy quarterback had all day to throw at that point thanks to Prosch.

6. DeAndre Hopkins makes one-handed catches look routine, and when he does it in practice, most have started to take it for granted. In the first one-on-one route vs. Johnathan Joseph, he had no business catching the throw from Brock Osweiler, but did. Joseph was in perfect position and somehow as the ball seemed to whizz past both of them Hop reached out and snared it with his left paw.

7. First rep of one-on-ones, another win for receiver Cecil Shorts. I don’t care what drill, individual or team, Shorts is having as strong a camp as ever. Furthermore, it’s not just one day here and another there. It’s every single day and every single rep.

8. One of the highlights of our discussion with Rick Smith this morning was our discussion of running back Kenny Hilliard. The Texans executive VP and GM noted that Hilliard changed his body composition and really developed as a runner and pass receiver. I mentioned that in observations over the weekend that his quickness, shiftiness and change of direction were diametrically different than as a rookie in 2015. That can really be seen in the passing game where he’s been a challenge to cover lately. He’s in and out of his breaks much quicker and getting separation more so than I can remember. Whether that’s out in the flat or middle breaking routes, he’s much more effective than last year in the passing game. Overall, though, he’s just a different looking threat at the position.

9. Running back Jonathan Grimes made a couple of outstanding catches in one-on-ones, including a one-hander down the sideline that got the attention of some media members standing around me.

10. The best rep of the period though was quarterback Brandon Weeden’s completion to tight end Anthony Denham. As Denham ran down the seam, rookie safety K.J. Dillon was in lock step. But, Weeden threw a pellet just above Dillon’s head and into Denham’s bread basket for the difficult completion. Dillon couldn’t have been in better position or competed harder for the ball. Denham couldn’t have made a better catch. Weeden couldn’t have thrown a better ball. That rep was really a win for everyone, to be honest.

11. Wide receiver Braxton Miller made a juggling catch, one of those that you sort of hold your breath while the ball is bouncing around in the air. He ultimately snagged it and secured it for a circus catch.

12. Later in the period, Miller was working against one of the defensive backs in one-on-ones. In all the years I’ve covered the Texans, I’ve never seen a receiver lose defensive backs the way that Braxton does. He had the defensive back trailing him down the field, but right on his heels. Miller broke down to prepare for his cut and then darted to his right. The defensive back went...left. I saw that throughout his career at Ohio State. I saw that at the Senior Bowl. I’m seeing it again here. He could get open in a phone booth.

13. Safety Quintin Demps had himself a day. The Texans starting safety was one of the few, if not the only, defenders to stay with Braxton Miller all over the field. He matched the rookie from Ohio State step for step and broke up a pass in one-on-ones. His best play though was on a deep route to receiver Jaelen Strong. Cornerback Kareem Jackson was in position on the outside, while Demps was coming from the middle of the field. Right as the ball landed, Demps timed his leap perfectly and knocked the ball out Strong’s hands for the pass breakup...and a quality one at that.

14. One of the reasons why tight end C.J. Fiedorowicz is having more success in the passing game this training camp is his route running. He seems to understand leverage and positioning much more, but he looks like he’s running well, too. So, improvement in his understanding of coverages, better route running and confidence in his hands are paramount to his growth as a pass catcher thus far.

15. During team drills, cornerback Charles James had a pick on his first play on the field. He read the quarterback’s eyes perfectly, broke on a short route in front of him, dove for the interception and then sprinted to the house. Of course, he wasn’t alone, as his defensive mates followed him all the way down the sideline.

16. Quarterback Brock Osweiler’s best throw of the day was his last during one of the team periods. He threw an absolute dart to DeAndre Hopkins on a deep in cut and by dart, I mean, DART, caps lock on.

17. A few reps later, Brandon Weeden ripped one to receiver Quenton Bundrage, who continues to make an impression. Standing where I was on the sideline, I could see exactly where Weeden wanted to throw the ball and led Bundrage right into that open spot.

18. I don’t have any problem with a quarterback throwing checkdowns in seven-on-seven, if it’s evident that the first option or even second option are not open. Osweiler did that like clockwork in seven-on-seven. He looked at two options to his right, then when it wasn’t there, he immediately swung his head around and looked to his left where he hit Jay Prosch out in the flat for a solid catch-and-run gain.

19. Quarterback Tom Savage made a throw, I’m 1,000 percent convinced that he wouldn’t have thrown, much less seen, during seven-on-seven. Bundrage was crossing the field on a deep in route, say 15 to 17 yards from the LOS. He was surrounded by four defenders, two safeties over the top and a couple of linebackers in the middle. In that tight, small space, Savage fired one that Bundrage was forced to catch, either that or it would’ve pierced his body and cut him in two. Bundrage had no choice but to hang on for the first down reception. Wow, what a throw that was.

20. During goal line seven-on-seven, cornerback Kevin Johnson came up with a pass breakup to start the drill and then had another one on a throw to the back of the end zone. I don’t know if he’d get credit for the second one, though, as receiver Jaelen Strong made the catch but had one foot out of bounds. Either way, it was a solid overall period for Johnson.

21. The development as a pass rusher continues for outside linebacker Whitney Mercilus. What I love about his prowess as an edge threat is the way that Whitney can now put moves together. Or, put a better way, if his initial move doesn’t produce a clear path, he can string together another move to continue to work himself free. It’s not herky-jerky or slow either. He throws a move and if it doesn’t completely work, he throws another one. He did that in pass rush one-on-ones to get free on one of his reps.

22. Defensive end Devon Still put an offensive lineman right on his wallet with one of his rushes in team drills near the end of the workout. That is one strong dude, now, and hopefully that strength will flash consistently throughout the rest of training camp.

23. Coach O’Brien noted after practice that it was a highly competitive day of work and that was mostly evident on the last play of team drills. It was on the far end zone so it was difficult to see the particulars. Regardless, a receiver made a catch that appeared to be for a touchdown, which elicited a cheer from the offense. But, right as the offense began to cheer, the defense let loose an even louder celebration. At that point, no one knew who won the rep but it was certainly clear that play was the culmination of a solid day of work.
