Brian Hoyer Shines It was the best Brian Hoyer has looked all offseason and the offense fed off his accuracy all practice. Hoyer showed he has some good touch throwing the ball and made some strong throws. Cecil Shorts helped the cause being Hoyer’s favorite target and Keith Mumphery made a big play on a long pass downfield running past coverage. His touch and feel for the offense is improving and it looks like he is settling into the offense. Ryan Mallett has to find a way to find some touch on his passes. He threaded the ball in some tight spaces to receivers in stride but there is still some work to be done developing his consistency. Mallett struggled with some of the personnel he was working with but as mini-camp progresses there could be a better feel for how the quarterback position shakes out. http://www.scout.com/nfl/texans/story/1555689-texans-mandatory-mini-camp-inside-the-bubble
It's times like this that I'm reminded of how absolutely terrible QB's get talked up early in the preseason.....guys like David Carr, Blaine Gabbert, and now Brian Hoyer.
Any QB performing well in camp gets talked up in preseason. It's like spring training, hope is in the air and everyone has a chance. You hope either Mallet or Hoyer play well enough for the coaches to trust them to make plays when it counts. Rich Gannon was not a popular pick among QBs when Gruden tabbed him as the starter in Oakland, he just found a system where he could finally do well. This praise for Hoyer may also have to do with a QB finally looking consistently competent for the first time in 3 years.
if it's hoyer then im done with this crap ass organization. we know what we will get with hoyer... at least mallett would make watching the texans more interesting because he is still unproven as a starter. looked good in one start and bad in a half of a start.
People with this opinion are strange. You'd rather go with the known commodity than the unknown commodity? If Hoyer is outperforming Mallett in training camp, there's no reason Mallett should start over Hoyer.
Its about trust in your coaching staff The old argument of .. . . THEY KNOW MORE THAN YOU EVER WILL doesn't always play out that way [See David Carr] Texans fans are a little sensitive . . .and short on trust with the organization Rocket River
Even if Hoyer leads them to a Super Bowl? It's shortsighted to be done with an organization simply because you don't like their choice in QB prior to him ever even playing a game.
Mike Meltzer the 610 radio host made a good point as to who should start. His reasoning was that no matter if Hoyer starts or not, you know what production you are going to get out of him, he has started many games. With Mallett, his potential is much higher due to his lack of experience (also making his floor much lower). Mallett should get the nod if it is an even race because there is more reward if he works out.
Exactly. Also, talking up Hoyer's accuracy in OTA's is kind of funny because we know it won't be there when it matters.....given that it literally never has been there when it counted, even if you include college. If the Texans go with Hoyer, we all know what they'll get, a completion percentage in the 50's, a QB rating in the 70's and it'll be a toss-up as to if he'll have more TD's or interceptions.
if he's inaccurate in practice, chances are, he will be inaccurate in games. It's always been Malletts problem and what holds him back.
The problem though is that Hoyer isn't an accurate QB either, so why not go with the guy that has the better QB tools? Personally I think that's exactly what they are going to do.
To be honest, I put the Carr blame on McNair. He liked Carr and pretty much mandated that Casserlys replacement say he could make Carr work. Kubiak essentially lied to get the job. None of the coaches ever liked him. At least here this appears to be Bill's decision so I'll trust his instincts for now. Hoyer still has potential left and may just need the right system in which to finally be productive. It's not unheard of for journeyman QBs to catch fire when finally in a system that fits. I mentioned Gannon earlier as a comparison. Before Oakland, nothing suggested Gannon would ever produce. He found the right coach and system with Gruden. Hopefully Bill can bring that same kind of magic here.
That's only because the team was heavily invested in Carr using the #1 over pick on him. The Texans have little invested in either Hoyer or Mallett so I see no bias for them to go with one over the other. Just what they see in camp.
http://www.scout.com/fantasy/story/1555773-daily-dr-roto-dropping-the-mallett Depressing if true but plenty of reason to believe the opposite.
If Mallet can't outperform Hoyer in practice........ that just shows what kind of player he really is. I feel Hoyer will start, be mediocre and probably get injured. In comes Mallet (Week 10) and we see what happens.
