Bill: Clowney has a midfoot sprain, tough injury, he knew he wouldn't be able to play in the game Clowney needs to get healthy and have a great offseason.
He was saying the same stuff before his first season. Nothing matters until the games start next season.
Clowney reminds me of Harden. He's smart enough to know what he is supposed to say and what the fans want to hear. It's just lip service until he proves it on the field.

Or until he's actually healthy. I have no doubt the mind is willing.... But the body has yet to cooperate.

So next year is Clownley's last year on his rookie contract but isn't there an option for the team to pick up a 5th year? Does anyone know the deadline to pick up that option?
Screw talking about Clowney he will dominate when actually healthy and with more experience but that won't win the super bowl. No longer letting this franchise distract me with irrelevant bs. We need a solid qb and some more beef on this oline.
Next year is only Clowney's third year. Rookie contracts are 4+1. May 3rd is the deadline for the 2013 class.
What makes me upset was there were many doubters and warnings about Clowney. He is takes plays off and he is always injured coming out of college. What do the Texans do, draft him anyways because he is going to be the next Lawrence Taylor. I remember the day of the draft and so many fans on the radio were loving this pick. I wonder if those fans have second thoughts now. I am tired of people saying, he has been injured, thereby he is not a bust yet. Do these same people think he is going to magically next year get 20 sacks, play 16 games and be the next JJ Watt?
The issue with Clowney is that he gets hurt in the weirdest ways… He goes for a tackle, falls on his back, and is out for two weeks. He tries to accelerate too hard and sprains a foot. Just random crap that doesn't get anyone else hurt. These kinds of injuries don't just go away….and it'll actually get worse as he gets older.
On the flip-side, guys who are getting hurt in a fluke-ish or circumstantial sort of way (vs. guys who have one catastrophic ligament injury or a chronic/arthritic condition that has no chance of getting better)... DO have a chance. He's only 23... I know things could get worse as he gets older, but that really wouldn't be for another 5-6 years (well past the point where he's either going to be retained long-term, or be let go). There have been examples of previously thought-to-be injury prone players (in all sports) who eventually have a run of good health... and the usual commonality is that they suffered the brunt of their injuries when they were young and still able to heal fully from them. Its still likely that he never lives up to the potential he was drafted with... but there's still a chance he can be a contributor at an elite level when healthy.
He will never be elite. He may have a good contract year, and someone will probably over pay for him, but after that he will be the same thing that he has always been. He seemed like a good pick at the time, but he has proven all of his naysayers to be absolutely right about him. He's not so much of a bust as he is exactly what a lot of people expected him to be, a big bunch of untapped potential. I see nothing about his past that would lead me to believe that he will ever accomplish anything more than that.
Well, his naysayers said that he was lazy and unmotivated...and he's proved them to be completely wrong. As injury plagued as his career has been, the one thing he has shown to be is a hard worker. You cant ask more from a player...it's not like he's choosing to get hurt. In the end, you want guys that put in the time, energy, and work off the field...and Clowney has done just that.
In the end, I think you want a little more than that from your number one overall pick. I won't call him a bust yet, but it's approaching that level pretty quickly.
It's a shame because I think he has all the talent and explosiveness that Von Miller has...hopefully it will all come together for him next year.
For all you that want to pawn Clowney off for nothing... From WalterFootball, about halfway down I thought it would be interesting to ask some opposing coaches their view on some of the recent draft picks and how they're looking in terms of development. A few AFC coaches said that Houston Texans edge defender Jadeveon Clowney is downright scary. They feel that if Clowney can stay healthy, he is going to be a nightmare and one of the best defenders in the league. They said the tapes he put together late in the season against the Patriots and Bills were incredible. Sources said that Clowney could be better than the Raiders' Khalil Mack, which is pretty incredible because those same sources said they believe that Mack will be a Hall of Famer. They said Mack is out of this world. -------- I'm not as high on Clowney as these "sources", but I think he could easily be better than Mario Williams has ever been. Pair that with Watt, and Mercilus, who can hopefully put games together when Clowney plays, and our younger pieces, and this defense is scary. No reason to pawn off Clowney for a shot at a quarterback that could potentially be good, but may not. That's just ridiculous. For a team that has gone 18-14 over two years with 8 quarterbacks, that just shows you're building something special.
