Alessandro Gentile led Olimpia Milano to their first Serie A Championship in the last 18 years.

The captain of EA7 was selected by the Houston Rockets in Thursday's NBA draft with the 53rd overall pick.

Gentile was named MVP of the Finals and paced all the scorers in Game 7 with 18 points in 28 minutes.

After the game Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey congratuled him on Twitter and welcomed him to the Houston Family.

Why not? Since Asik has been traded and Lin is very likely to be traded to facilitate the Lebron/Melo sweepstakes, who do you see on the remaining Rockets bench that has that spot locked up?

Gentile is better than Delfino, who was once the Rockets' 6th man.

I'm italian and I know Gentile very well. I can assure you he is a very good player but, just like any european guy, we have to wait and see if he will adapt or not. Gentile is a way better shooter (and assist man) than Belinelli.

Shooting: The shot mechanics is probably his biggest flaw overall, and the one that limits the most his potential NBA career. His release is not quick and the mechanics are not fluid, with a little pause before the ball leaves his hand. This affects significantly his percentages, plus it makes the trajectory of his shot predictable and flat, limiting its effectiveness. In catch and shoot situations he has shown significant improvement, especially behind the three point line, but he must work on the pull-up jumper in order to add consistency to his midrange game, where currently he is struggling the most.

Position Offense: With the exception of the shot mechanics his offense is basically complete in every aspect: pull up jumpers, fakes, use of pivot foot and a great effectiveness in exploiting his body even in post position. He has an aggressive style of play, with a great ability to attack the basket and reaching the rim, even in conditions of limited balance. He has incredibly developed scoring instincts, with the ability to put the ball on the floor and attack the close out. Plus he has developed a better decision making, which is positively influencing his shot selection. His physical strength is also combined with a great body control, and an effective use of both hands, which allows him to create around the rim with a great variety of options: floaters, finger rolls, power moves are all part of his repertoire, but it’s in transition game where he excels, often closing with powerful dunks. He has also a really effective post game, using his big body to post up smaller opponents, but his preferred option is always to attack opponents off the dribble. His off the ball game is effective when talking about spacing, thanks to his superior game comprehension he’s able to free himself to get open, but he has to improve on using screens and in P&R situations. In fact, he tends to use screens merely to take advantage to attack the basket instead of finding space for the shot. Despite being not a pass first guard he has good passing skills with the ability to change side on the offense finding teammates on the perimeter.

Defense/Rebounding: Gentile shows a solid defensive attitude, especially when he has to challenge the best scorer of the opponent, as a part of his competitive personality. His body allows his team defensive flexibility since in certain conditions he could guard power forwards without particular struggles. On the contrary his average lateral speed limits his effectiveness in guarding smaller and quicker opponents, especially in ISO situations. This flaw is partially compensated by his good positioning and quick hands, and could be also limited if his team has a solid defensive system, like the one developed by Italian national team. From the rebounding standpoint he could be more effective for a big guard of 6-7, with just 2.5 rebounds collected during last European championship in a team that lacked height and athleticism.

Miscellaneous: Since the beginning of his career he has shown the tendency to lose control in situations of stress, generating arguments with opponents and referees, but this was just a side effect of his great self-confidence, which sometimes is perceived as arrogance. But this aspect of his temper is also one of his biggest qualities, that allows him to carry the team on his shoulders in clutch and difficult situations; he’s not scared at all to take responsibilities, showing great poise. From this standpoint last Eurobasket could be considered a turning point of his senior career, since he showed the capability to put his talent at the service of the team, limiting the excesses that have been flawed the initial part of his professional experience. Plus he has a superior game comprehension, which is only partially limited by his bad temper, in fact he was nurtured in an elite context from this standpoint, having a model like his father Ferdinando, one of the best Italian players ever, and including his father’s teammates and coaches, like Bogdan Tanjevic.

Overall Rating: Alessandro Gentile is definitely, with Dario Saric, the front runner of the International platoon that will face 2014 NBA draft and one of the most intriguing prospects of his generation. His combination of skills, physical strength and confidence makes him potentially one of the most dominant players in Europe for at least the next 10 years, if he’ll be able to limit the excesses of his temper. But in order to translate his game at the NBA level he’ll need the necessary humbleness to work on his shortcomings, investing time on individual workouts with personal trainers and shot specialists.

I believe he's automatically eligible as he turns 22 this year. So we drafted him without consulting him or his agent basically.

Damn, didnt know that's how it goes down with Euro players. Must be weird to randomly be told that some team from a foreign league just drafted you and if you ever wish to join that foreign league, that team has your rights...

I can see how it could be daunting for a Euro to go from being 'the man' on a championship team to just being another bench guy in the NBA. It would be a huge come down for your ego.
