No doubt: the Houston Dynamo is thinking big. First leaked that the list of potential designated players who has the team is the Mexican Giovani Dos Santos and now the coach Dominic Kinnear told the RUMBO Andres D’Alessandro is another player who is also interested in the orange team after the strategist watched in person during a recent trip he made to Brazil in search of reinforcements.

Ashe and Oduro are both out of contract and haven't been able to come to terms with the team to re-sign, so they left them exposed. I can't really blame them, there's no reason to use a protected spot on a player that may or may not be around next year anyway, and if they are asking for too much Portland and Vancouver may not want them anyway.

I thought Pat Onstad would get picked up by Vancouver.

Corey Ashe and Eddie Robinson have re-signed. They provide good depth but neither one of them are starter material, hopefully they aren't being paid too much.

Dynamo acquire Jordan Graye.

The Houston Dynamo have acquired defender Jordan Graye in a trade with the Portland Timbers, the teams announced today. In exchange for Graye, the Dynamo sent their natural fourth-round pick in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft to the Timbers. The Timbers had selected Graye from D.C. United in the MLS Expansion Draft in November.

Graye, 23, completed his first professional season in 2010 with hometown club D.C. United, making 20 starts and playing 1,662 minutes in MLS play, fourth on the team. Graye can play either outside back position.

“Jordan is a promising young defender who is known for being a good athlete,” Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear said. “He was pretty unheralded but played a lot of games for D.C. last year. I’m looking forward to having him in Houston and helping him continue to grow as a player.”

Graye played in the D.C. United Academy while in high school but was drafted by the club after five years at the University of North Carolina. After seeing minimal college action in his first two seasons, one of which he redshirted, Graye saw increased playing time in 2007 and became a regular starter on squads that reached the NCAA College Cup in 2008 and 2009. He was selected by D.C. United in the fourth round of last year’s MLS SuperDraft.

“I’m glad to come to Houston, and I already know some people on the team like Corey Ashe and Tyler Deric from UNC,” Graye said. “They seem to enjoy playing for Houston, and I hear good things about the coaches, so I’m looking forward to getting a chance to play.”

This is great news. I'd like to see Cameron moved back to defense, he did OK in the midfield but I'd rather us bring in a better attacking mid and have Cameron solidify our backline.

Dynamo acquire rights to Hunter Freeman and sign him to deal.

The Houston Dynamo announced today they have acquired defender and Texas native Hunter Freeman. The Dynamo acquired Freeman’s rights in a trade with the New York Red Bulls, and he has signed a multi-year contract. Per team and league policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. Freeman will be formally introduced at a 2:30 p.m. press conference today at the Dynamo offices.

In the trade, the Dynamo sent allocation money to New York in exchange for the rights to Freeman, who left MLS after the 2008 season to play for IK Start in Norway, and New York’s natural third-round pick in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft.

“I’m very happy to acquire Hunter,” Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear said. “I’ve always liked the way he plays. He can play on the left or right, he likes to attack, and I enjoyed his company when I worked with him on a Generation adidas trip. So I’m happy to see him come back to MLS and playing for us.”

Freeman, who will turn 26 in January, was born in Tyler, Texas, and grew up in Allen, northeast of Dallas. He spent two years in the U.S. U-17 residency program in Bradenton, Fla., and three years at the University of Virginia. Freeman signed a Generation adidas contract with Major League Soccer and was taken with the No. 7 overall pick of the 2005 MLS SuperDraft. The Dynamo are his fourth MLS club, following the Colorado Rapids, New York Red Bulls, and Toronto FC.

In SBnation's new mock draft, they have us selecting Will Bruin (striker) with the 7th pick. I wouldn't mind this pick at all.

7. Will Bruin (Houston Dynamo)

Zach Woosley (Dynamo Theory): The Dynamo need depth up front and bringing in a young talent like Bruin should give Dominic Kinnear some options, while not needing the rookie to play a vital role right from the start. The Dynamo don't have any position that needs someone that can immediately start, so they have the luxury of bringing in a player that can be a potential starter in the future. Bruin is a big, strong forward with a proven ability to score. A season working with Brian Ching and battling the experienced Dynamo defense in practice should help Bruin develop into a dangerous scoring option for the Dynamo. Calling a player a "can't miss" pick really isn't fair, but it's hard to not think that Bruin is just that, he's a steal at the seventh pick for the Dynamo.

Drew Epperley (WV Hooligan): I thought Houston would go toward fixing their defense but let's face it, their offense needs plenty of work too. Bruin is likely a starter right away for this bunch as he'll be a good compliment to Ching up top. Kinnear is good at getting the most out of young players and I gotta think he'll get plenty out of Bruin.

Looks like the Dynamo front office is still being aggressive in finding that DP.

Some draft news:

*Dynamo coach Dominic Kinnear and staff will be attending the MLS Combine in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
All MLS Clubs will be represented as well as agents, college coaches, scouts and other movers and shakers in soccer . The Dynamo have a number 7 draft pick and are expected to pick up a player out of college. What that means is a player that in year one that can contribute ala Tim Ream in NY, Danny Mwanga in Phllly etc. The MLS Superdraft is in Baltimore on January 13th.

The combine is an interesting conglomeration of coaches, club officials and others. Players have in the past come in at various levels of fitness. MLS clubs have scouted many of these players and I am sure have a list of interest and many times come to seek out the validation of their scouting. Still as we all know, the player making the jump from the college game to the pro game can still be a roll of the dice in many cases as to their adaptability. Many a great college player has not made the grade.

The Dynamo have made it clear that they are seeking out the best player they can find not in the draft , positional need is secondary.

No surprise here, the Dynamo are looking to make an impact next season and a project player won't help our championship aspirations right now.

John Rooney will certainly be available by our pick but the 7th pick might be too high for him unless he improves his stock during the combine. I would very well be interested in grabbing a late first or second round pick and snatch Rooney then though.

The only thing Wayne Rooney's brother has going for him is that he's Wayne Rooney's brother. The name is great and all, but it would be a worthless signing, IMO.

I'd like to see him in action before judging him (perhaps in the combine games but I can't find a stream for those) but from everything I've read about him he seems like a very solid second round pick.

Looks like Rooney has impressed, tomorrow's game will be pivotal for him.

He's not the only international who seems to be edging up the rankings. John Rooney showed better than expected. Which might mean that he showed at all, as the expectations were that he was merely there for his last name. He's got a bit of talent though. Ives has him as a possible 1st rounder, depending on Monday's performance.

Some good things said about Will Bruin as well.

Leading up to the 2011 MLS Draft, we've been discussing some of the possible players that D.C. United could draft with their third overall pick. We'd love to see the team select either Perry Kitchen or Darlington Nagbe, but neither seems likely to be available, and opinion appears to be split on Omar Salgado.

As our series rolls on leading up to the draft on Thursday, we take a look at Indiana's Will Bruin, who could be the forward most ready to contribute immediately for whichever MLS team is luckiest to acquire him.

Bruin started all 20 of Indiana's matches in 2010, and scored 18 goals as a junior. He really came on late in the season, showing maturity and leading his team to a Big Ten Championship win, and to the third round of the NCAA Tournament before losing to Akron.

Bruin has been called the best finisher in the draft and has been compared to Justin Braun. We'd take that.

All along I've been thinking of Bruin as a player who could have a first season similar to that of Zach Schilawski, who scored five goals for the New England Revolution last year, most of them off the bench. I could be shooting too low. Bruin is the type of player who would be expected to get plenty of time in our lineup, and could even start next to Josh Wolff and ahead of Joseph Ngwenya.

The question all along though has been whether United will be looking for someone who can play on March 19, or someone who could potentially turn into a 10-goal scorer and annual All-Star. I've always been under the impression that Salgado's ceiling is higher than Bruin's. But I've been wrong before.

Who knows. This argument could be irrelevant anyway if Kitchen is still on the board. But if he's not, I know what I'd do if both Salgado and Bruin are both available. I'd take the better long-term prospect.

I won't be surprised in the least though if Ben Olsen disagrees. He's got a job to do, and that job involves winning games. If Bruin gives United the best chance to win, then I'll happily welcome him to the team.

Bruin seems to be the ideal pick for the Dynamo, he's the most MLS-ready and he's a finisher that would compliment Ching. Whether he's still available at #7 is the question, Houston might want to try and move up in the draft and secure him or another prospect (Kitchen?).

OregonLive reports that the projected #1 overall pick may not want to play in Vancouver.

A rumor emerging from the combine is that Darlington Nagbe doesn't want to be drafted by the Vancouver Whitecaps. The reason behind the rumor could be related to his family. If the rumor is true, the development will have a major impact on the draft and the Whitecaps.

The Whitecaps have the first overall pick in the draft. Vancouver coach Teitur Thordarson reacted with surprise when I asked him about the rumor.

"No, I haven't heard that," Thordarson said Sunday. "If that's the case, I would have to think about that."

Patrick McCabe, Nagbe's agent, said through an e-mail that Nagbe - the potential top pick - isn't talking to the media until Wednesday at the earliest. McCabe's e-mail didn't address the rumor about whether his client wants to go to Vancouver.

If Nagbe decides to go Steve Francis (the then-NBA Vancouver Grizzlies selected Francis in the 1999 NBA draft and then traded Francis to Houston after he said he did not want to play for the Grizzlies) on the Whitecaps, his move will place a tremendous amount of pressure on the Whitecaps between now and Thursday's SuperDraft.

"If (Nagbe's) opinion is very clear, then I would have to think about that," Thordarson said. "But I think Nagbe is a good player and no matter what, he will have a value for us."

Would the Whitecaps draft someone who doesn't want to be there and have a very unhappy player on their hands? Considering the Whitecaps previous dealings with youngsters Omar Salgado (international transfer certificate problems) and Cody Arnoux (draft eligibility issues) were shaky at best, the last thing the Whitecaps need is another player controversy. Particularly with their first-ever MLS pick.

What Thordarson seems to be implying about Nagbe's "value" is a possible trade. Who would the Whitecaps receive in return for giving up the top overall selection and first-ever franchise pick? Another angle to the rumor is the Whitecaps might trade the top pick for two top-10 first round picks, giving them three top picks in the first round (the Whitecaps also have the eighth pick). However, even that scenario seems like a high-stakes gamble. This is, after all, the Whitecaps' first-ever MLS draft pick, which is destined to go down in franchise history.

Imagine a headline that would read, "Whitecaps trade first-ever MLS pick." Yikes.

And how would the Whitecaps look if that traded first overall pick ends up as the next Landon Donovan?

If the rumor is true, the easy way out for the Whitecaps would be to skip Nagbe and select one of his former Akron teammates, such as Perry Kitchen, Zarek Valentin or Kofi Sarkodie. The Whitecaps would still acquire a high-quality player without the potential issues.

The Whitecaps have said mulitple times in the past that they would trade the pick if the price was right. The Dynamo own the 7th overall pick and could easily put together a decent package in order to move up. Nagbe looks like a gem.

Dynamo offer contract to Josue Soto

The Houston Dynamo have exercised their right to offer a contract to academy product Josue Soto under the league's newly expanded "home grown" player rules. The 5-8, 180lb midfielder joined the Dynamo Academy in 2007 after high school at Prepa Tec in Monterrey, Mexico.

Soto played for Campbell College in 2007 and 2008, earning First Team All-Atlantic Sun Conference honors both seasons. He transferred to SMU in 2009 and was named a Second Team All-Conference USA pick and an All-Midwest Region Team selection in 2010.

Because Soto was a part of the Dynamo academy system, the team had the right under MLS rules to offer Soto a contract as a home grown player. Soto, if he agrees to he contract, will not be part of the SuperDraft on Thursday and would not count against the team's salary cap.

The Dynamo have informed the league of their desire to sign Soto and now the league will make a formal contract proposal.

Great news! Soto was a projected 2nd round draft pick and considering that the Dynamo do not own a pick after the first round, this would sort of make up for that assuming Soto signs. He doesn't exactly fill a need but I would love the signing regardless.
