Isn't Josh Smith still getting paid out by Pistons since being released. From what I remember it was a pretty chunk of change?. If so I wouldn't see why he wouldn't take a low bargain deal from rockets
Should have posted this in a Josh Smith thread. Yes he gets paid for a few years. Can't recall the figure. Like 5ish over 5 years. Just a guess.
His payment from the pistons is offset by his payment from other teams. BimaThug has a series of tweets talking about him being courted by LAC and what signing with them would entail in terms of payment breakdown.

Re: Josh Smith set-off - If he signs for full Non-Bird amount w/HOU, he'll get paid $7.07M this season ($2.49M from HOU, $4.58M from DET).
— David Weiner (@BimaThug) July 7, 2015

...However, if Smith gets full MLE from HOU (or elsewhere), he'll get paid $8.55M this season ($5.464M from new team, $3.09M from DET).
— David Weiner (@BimaThug) July 7, 2015

HOU likely trying to convince Josh (< $1.5M) difference between MLE & Non-Bird (+ Texas tax perks) favor him helping team, taking Non-Bird.
— David Weiner (@BimaThug) July 7, 2015

Josh Smith should not be vilified if he wants that extra $1.5M (or more, if he can get > MLE somewhere). It is worth noting that the amount JSmoove gets paid by the Pistons will be reduced depending on the amount of his next contract. I'm sure this has been discussed on the bbs somewhere?? Basically, Pistons owe him $14m. The amount they pay him is offset by (whatever contract he signs - vet min)/2. And yes, that affects his bottom line. Sample (a) he signs for vet min. Pistons pay him $14m Team pays him vet min ($1.448) Total $15.448m Sample (b) He signs for $2.5m Pistons pay him $14m - (2.5-1.448)/2 = $13.474m Team pays him $2.5m Total $15.974 Sample (c) He signs for $5m Pistons pay him $14m - (5-1.448)/2 = $12.22m Team pays him $5m Total $17.22m etc
If Smith does the Rockets a favor, he'll come out ahead long-term. Morey always makes sure that happens when players help the team on their contracts.
he can at least sign a one year vet min or one year 2-3mil then see if he wants to stay after this season.
But for real Morey got Parsons 14 mil extra last year. If parsons had taken the 12 mil deal he wanted two years ago. That's three mil extra next year and the year after that. And extra in 2017 season since he would have been locked up at 12 mil and now he will be a fa with a 108 cap.
DET used the stretch provision for waived players. That enables them to divide the amount due Smith over a period of 5 years, essentially paying him only $5M a year. Smith does deserve more, but hopefully he offsets that with the career renaissance he experienced here, and the patience the coaching staff shows him.
Honestly if Josh smith didn't sign for vet min, I'd think he's pretty greedy considering Pistons are also paying him.
Yeah, but it means that whatever else he gets paid by someone else, he loses 50c on every dollar over $1.448mill (it gets subtracted from Detroits requirement).
I think it has been so quiet on Josh because he's waiting to see what happens with KJ and how much of the MLE it will take to retain him. Why sign for 2.49MM now when 3MM might be on the table or more if the Rockets decide the deal KJ gets isn't something they can match (poison pills like escalating salaries or trade kickers). Unless the Clippers also have their full MLE, he's looking at vet minimum offers elsewhere to play for a contender.
I think we get him back, since he becomes the 2nd worst free throw shooter along with his boy D12 and they love not playing in the 4th Qtr...
