"Jones has slipped under the radar ever since his sophomore season at Kentucky, when he took a backseat to Anthony Davis and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist on a team that won a national title. With his stats depressed in a smaller role, he fell to the Rockets at No. 17 in 2012, the last in a long line of young PF's they drafted in the first round. After barely playing as a rookie, he carved out a spot for himself in the starting line-up as a second-year player, averaging 12 points and 7 rebounds a game on 54% shooting."

"At 6'9 250 with a 35' max vertical, Jones has the physical measurements and athleticism of a lottery pick."

"That could end up being the great irony of the Rockets seemingly fruitless search for a third star - they've been frantically looking under every rock when that player has been on hand the whole time."

The only way he becomes a star is if Houston gets over-packed with homeless folks.

I, for one, am pumped about Jones' potential. Thought the bench doesn't excite and could use improvement..I'm content with our starters and feel like any needs could be re-evaluated closer to the trade deadline.

Agreed. TJones played pretty well last year, but not consistently. There were times when he drove to the basket that he looked like he might be the real deal:

I think he will average 18/8/3 with 1 block and 1 steal per game this season.

Hopefully that will make him a very valuable asset...

I think Terrence Jones will put up good numbers, but that he is fool's gold.

I keep wanting to deny TJones but the truth is that he stepped up big time when we were looking for a PF. Maybe most folks aren't as high on him because the last time we saw him was during an embarrassing defensive effort. The truth is that he is incredibly young and can most definitely get better. If Chandler could grow from a hustle+energy player by year 3, why can't TJones?

I think it's time someone mentioned the pink elephant in the room. Terrence Jones was arguably the worst defender among starting 4's last season, allowing practically every PF who went against him to put up career numbers. There, I said it.

Yeah and all year he disappeared against the elite PF's. About all we will see in the next playoffs also are top tier PF's. So we no ugrade that position we are one and done...again.

Too bad he just cant defend PF's in the western conference.

Its not like with Beverley, where the defense is already elite, because Beverley can always put up more shots in the gym, he can always improve his passing and his handling and speed.

Jones just physically can't defend Davis, Aldridge, Griffin, Ibaka, Lee, Duncan/Splitter, Dirk, Love, maybe Randle...

Beverley can defend all of those team's point guards, some to a lesser degree than others.

And defense is what we need. Being a UK fan, it pains me to say it, but unless the dude puts in some serious work...

only ones he had glaring problems with were dirk, aldridge, griffin, and zbo. "hey i realize for 90% of the teams you are pretty good, but you are a terrible player due to your performance against the other 10%".

it's not really a terrible thing to have difficulty with those players when it's jones's second year. pretty big learning curve for bigs in the NBA.

im all for finding an upgrade. but who? what 4 is going to stop those skilled vet bigs?

Ibaka had 27 and 9 on April 4th, 12 and 16 on May 11th, 21 and 15 on Jan 16th... No its not just those few.

As to answer your question... I have no idea. Just saying, the WC has a potential all star at PF on almost every team but Sac, LAL, and us. And now that LA drafted Randle, that dude will bully Jones around all night.

offensively he was explosive on most nights. a PF with the quickness and handles to blow by the big 4s guarding him. defensively he's better as a help defender. as yet he doesn't have the weight and defensive fundamentals against the elite PFs.

will that improve or he's really a tweener?

TJ is pretty good defender with some limitation on length and experience/awareness. But can second year Griffin/Zbo or even DWH defend prime Aldrdge very well?

Given enough touches, Aldridge can't defend TJ. We didn't let TJ attack Aldridge enough, and Aldridge was having trouble in limited minutes we did.

    Guy's 6'9" with a 7'2" wingspan. How's that a limitation on length?

Jones also had very good games against some marque PF's as well:

November 27, 2013 pretty much played Paul Millsap even
    Jones 14 pts 5 rbs 1 blk 23 mins
    Millsap 16 pts 6 rbs 1 blk 25 mins

December 6, 2013 outplayed David Lee
    Jones 16 pts 10 rebs 3 blks 31 mins
    Lee 11 pts 3 rebs 0 blks 22 mins

December 25, 2013 outplayed Tim Duncan
    Jones 21 pts 14 rebs 3 blks 42 mins
    Duncan 11 pts 14 rebs 6 blks 34 mins

December 28, 2013 played extremely well against Anthony Davis
    Jones 17 pts 8 rebs 3 blks 34 mins
    Davis 18 pts 16 rebs 1 blk 38 mns

January 15, 2014 slightly outplayed Anthony Davis
    Jones 25 pts 8 rebs 6 blks 42 mins
    Davis 24 pts 7 rebs 1 blk 31 mins

January 15, 2014 outplayed Tim Duncan (again)
    Jones 21 pts 9 rebs 1 blk 38 mins
    Duncan 11 pts 14 rebs 4 blks 30 mins

March 4, 2014 outplayed Chris Bosh
    Jones 19 pts 12 rebs 1 blk 35 mins
    Bosh 5 pts 5 rebs 0 blks 22 mins

April 14, 2014 outplayed Tim Duncan again
    Jones 20 pts 11 rebs 0 blks 39 mins
    Duncan 12 pts 9 rebs 0 blks 30 mins

All of those players are All-Star players and Jones acquitted himself very well against them for a player that is only 22 years old. Anthony Davis was the number 1 pick in the same draft that the Rockets picked Jones and those two had great battles every time they played against each other. Jones still has a long ways to go but he certainly proved that he is very capable of playing with and even outplaying all-star caliber power forwards.

As for Julius Randle, why exactly do you think he is going to come into the league and immediately start man handling Jones or any other NBA player? I think that is a ridiculous thought. Jones is bigger than Randle and has 2 years of NBA development playing against men.

    Julius Randle 19 years old
    Code:
    Year 2014
    Source NBA Draft Combine
    Height w/o Shoes 6' 7.75"
    Height w/shoes 6' 9"
    Weight 250
    Wingspan 7' 0"
    Standing Reach 8' 9.5"
    Body Fat 9.4
    No Step Vert 29
    Max Vert 35.5
Terrence Jones currently 22 but here is the same combine numbers from the year he was drafted when he was 19:
    Code:
    Year 2012
    Source NBA Draft Combine
    Height w/o Shoes 6' 8.25"
    Height w/shoes 6' 9.5"
    Weight 252
    Wingspan 7' 2.25"
    Standing Reach 8' 11"
    Body Fat 7.7
    No Step Vert 29.5
    Max Vert 34.5
Jones has better measurables almost all the way around than Randle. The only measurable that Randle beats Jones at is the Max Vert and he only beats Jones by 1 inch. Jones is .5 inches taller, 2.5 inches longer wingspan, 1.5 inches longer on standing reach, Jones weighs more and has less body fat.
