A Secret Weapon to Slowing Down Aldridge and Lilliard

On the eve of the biggest game of the year I was thinking about Lilliard and LMA and a secret way we could stop them. Okay it's not so secret but I think playing DMo is the answer. I’m not saying a lot of minutes and I’m not saying he’s the missing link (no pun intended). But he is the best perimeter defending big we have and he also switches better than any other big we have. It really isn’t that close.

Yeah his interior D drops off a bit but it’s better than the other guys off the bench not named Asik and he always plays hard. I appreciate that and think it’s just what we need to slow down Lilliard and LMA. He has the lateral quickness to cover LMA better and he is capable of switching and helping out on Lilliard. Sampson knew that and applauded him for it. I wish McHale could see it. Plus there is the added bonus that his hustle and hard play will be contagious like Beverly.

I think the Twin Towers is a bad idea and Portland hopes we run that lineup. They are waiting for it. It just hurts are offense way too much. Asik can’t guard LMA laterally and can’t switch on PnR’s.

DMo’s height makes him difficult to shoot over and he has more lateral quickness than Asik. Plus while he is not great on the offensive side he is better than Asik . He’s always a willing passer and he almost never tries to do too much on offense.

Maybe he’s not the answer but at least try it. It took McHale half the season to see DMo could help this team. But then he did and the results were good. At one point DMo was the first guy off the bench and when he was getting his most minutes is when we played our best basketball. And now he is a DNP. I don’t get it and hope McHale sees his way to playing DMo sooner rather than later.

If Dwight couldn't guard LA, DMO can't guard LA. I'd stick Cisco on LA... Garcia did a good job on Durant last year I'm pretty sure he can defend decently LA. And I'd really limit TJones minutes this series. His defense is a big liability.

    Go to bed!

Actually, I'm interested in seeing if this happens. I'd like to see DMo be given a chance for all the reasons you stated. Quickness and height is something we can never have enough of.

Hell no. You can't put Garcia on LA if you plan to win any rebounds. D-Mo actually has the length to contest LA and fight him for rebounds. T-Jones is a better rebounder than Garcia and LA still got 18 boards over him.

I agree with Old Man. I was completely confused as to why D-Mo wouldn't be part of the game plan in the playoffs after being a solid contributor off the bench throughout the season, especially his brilliant idea of matching up the T-Jones with LA one-on-one.

We need to rotate Dwight, Asik and D-Mo on LA. We also can't play the twin towers as Portland is just going to salivate and start drawing fouls on us causing us to lose our centers twice as fast as if they were out there one at a time.

Dwight did do a good job on LA in the few possessions he was on him. LA isn't going to have a desperate fade-away 3 every time Dwight blocks the ball back in his face.

I don't think guns and knives are allowed on the court.

DMO should be given an opportunity to guard Aldridge. I can't understand why he got no playing time in Game 1. Had they played DMO at all we probably win that game, because he is a better defender than TJ no doubt.

I thought of matching Dwight on Aldridge and playing D-Mo in Lopez, but then I saw D-Mo wasn't even active and stopped wasting my time.

OMR, if we lose this very important 2nd game, I am pretty sure McHale will try anything, including throwing the kitchen sink.

For the record, DMO's height and mobility may bother LMA, so to that extent I agree with you.

    Cisco can't guard LA.

I agree that Dmo has to guard him, I think he will do a better job and it without a doubt can't be any worse than the first game.

You clearly don't watch basketball... T-Jones is one of the worst rebounders on this team in terms of actually boxing out and preventing offensive rebounds. Sure he is long and athletic but he gets big boy'd down there by the real bugs he's playing against.

no way Garcia going to guard LA , i'd stick with Jones or try Dmo,but no more 1 on 1, double him if he try to post up and get into the paint, force him to take mid range jumper. LA averaged 20+%fg from mid range down the stretch

You guys are making it harder than it needs to be. Dmo? Garcia? Seriously???

Dwight should be passionate and assertive enough to put himself on LMA and make it a personal mission to stop him. Mchale should be smart enough to put one of the leagues best defenders on the opposing teams best big. WTF is the point of wasting Dwight on Lopez?

Hopefully one of them gets a clue game 2 and beyond.

I agree with playing D-mo more on LA. I think his height will give him trouble (more than anybody besides Asik and Howard).

What people have not considered is letting DMO or TJ guard Robin Lopez. This would allow either asik or dwight to guard LA. LA would be forced to take jumpers to get his points because he will not be able to back down asik or howard, which I can live with. The only thing TJ and DMO would need to focus on is boxing out and grabbing boards.

Lopez is actually pretty good offensively. He's nowhere near LMA, but in the end you might end up with Dwight's containment of LMA getting made up by Lopez torching Jones and then some.

You're not gonna completely stop LMA. You just have to deny him the entry pass as much as possible and make him either work his own way in (which will tire him out) or settle for jumpers (which is very inefficient). Either way you win.

+1. Put Dwight on LMA. Dwight needs to take the responsibility and clamp him down, mano a mano. He should be the star that we all thought he is. DMo can replace him on the job sometime. McHale's a former "star big" and he should know what to do... Hopefully...
