Can someone please remind me of the approximate dates on when Springer's "arbitration clock" and/or free agency get pushed back? Isn't April 16 a bit early for a call-up if there were supposed to be financial reasons for keeping him down? If so, what the hell was he doing in OKC to begin with?
There are basically two dates of financial significance -- one comes 11 games into the year, and the other in late June or so. So by waiting until now, as opposed to Opening Day, the Astros did hit 1 of the 2 dates. But I'll let someone else explain in detail.
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>MLB season is 183 days. Full year of service 172 days. Astros calling up George Springer, per <a href="https://twitter.com/EvanDrellich">@EvanDrellich</a>. Delay buys team an extra year.</p>— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) <a href="https://twitter.com/JeffPassan/statuses/456288123974979584">April 16, 2014</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script> <blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>If Springer started year with Astros, would hit free agency in 2019. So 2 week delay for a full extra season of club control?? How in the world could you argue against that at this point? Would have been incredibly stupid to have had him on team on Opening Day given that.
