I think McHale should give Bev a few "trial" starts towards the end of the preseason

If this doesn't warrant its own thread, feel free to merge it.

First of all, I'm a fan of Lin and Bev and this isn't a "LOH" thread. Lin looked good tonight. One thing I immediately noticed that he improved on was his handles with ball pressure. It's too early to say if his handles actually got better, but Jrue was in his grill all night and Lin didn't seem fazed by the ball pressure. He also made some really nice passes and just looked good overall as a point guard.

I still think Lin is our starter for now, but the havoc Bev creates for opposing PG's and the thought of how he can impact the game as a starter has to be too intriguing to not at least try it a few times.

Lin as a starter is expecting to play around 32 mins a game, and even if he comes off the bench, he'll still get about the same playing time anyway. Plus, with Harden, Chandler and Dwight all needing their shots, Lin's talents might be better utilized with the second unit. Lin leading our second unit could be deadly too, not only with his scoring ability, but his ability to give guys like Casspi/Brewer and T-Jones/D-Mo better looks.

I'm not calling for Bev to be the starter opening tip-off, but with McHale planning to experiment Asik and Dwight on the court together before opening tip-off, why not experiment Bev as the starter for at least 2 exhibition games or something and see what happens, and we also get to experiment Lin's effectiveness as a 6th man too at the same time. It might work out in favor for the Rockets but it also might not, this is why we have exhibition games. For all we know, Bev might not be as effective as a starter after all this fantasizing.

Of course, if Linsanity returns every game for the remainder of the preseason, I'd take back everything I said in this thread. :)

I actually like Bev as a spark off the bench more than him as a starter. Fits his game more IMO.

I think if bev starts, it will change his game totally... the reason he plays like that is because he comes off the bench as a spark... this is reason why I like bev coming of the bench... because you can strategies when will his dogging defense be effective... it is most effective when the opponent is half gassed than when they are fresh...

I've been biting my tongue for a long time now, but I guess I'll say it now.

It feels like the PG position always has grass greener on the other side. When Lin was a backup he got (over?) hyped and was called on to be a starter. Now that he is a starter it seem like PB is the new greener grass, but guess what. For all those faults in Lins game that became glaringly obvious as a starter, we will probably discover PB has a few himself.

When Lin was a backup he was praised for his defensive skill. Now that he is a starter he is criticized for lack of it. I suspect that if PB starts, against a starter competition, the people will be looking for greener grass elsewhere.

Things are different this year, and in ways which will work somewhat against Beverley.

If you watched the game tonight, and, if you read asst. coach Chris Fitch's recent article about this year's gameplan on offense, you'll know that the gameplan this year is to take the ball out of Harden's hands to allow him to expend more energy on defense and also to create a "freer flowing" offense with less Harden ISO. This works great with Lin at the point but, not so great with Bev at the point b/c Bev is not a playmaker.

In tonight's game you of course notice that they tried this very offensive approach. With Lin--it worked great; however with Bev the offense was stagnant, all ISO's.

Consider these numbers: alongside Lin, Harden was +17; alongside Bev, Harden was -1. What this means is that Bev is NOT a skilled playmaker. Duh. We knew that already. The Rocket's new offensive gameplan will not work when Bev and Harden are together. So...Harden would probably then have to run the show whenever Bev is at point, however this is EXACTLY what the Rox coaching staff is trying to stay away from.

Bottom line...Lin starts. It also means that the Rox coaching staff will probably play Lin with Bev instead of Bev with Harden.

Na, the best passers on a team pretty much always play with the best finishers.

Energy off the bench makes much more sense.

The way Bev went after Holliday tonight...you can't play like that for 32 minutes, you just can't; not over 82 games. Bev is the perfect energy guy off the bench. Were he to start and play longer minutes his defense would suffer and you would see far fewer of these type of plays.

Beverly is a good on the ball defender and to hold back the opposition while the starters rest that seems good. But he doesn't seem to create offense for others and It seems like the lead created by the starters either stagnates or slowly erodes. Seems like Beverly with the second unit doesn't extend the lead, just be lucky to hold it. I think Lin staying in with Beverly and the second unit is good. Lin coordinating the offense and Beverly keeping up pressure as a defender.

What? Did you watched tonight game?

Beverly already played big minutes with the starters (Dwight, Harden, Parsons).

As good as his defensive skill is, the bigger problem for him is he does not have good court vision or attack the paint and still makes too safe passes.

He is most effective in burst and until he proves he can make some plays and create shot himself he will stay as a good backup position.

It's not smart to pick up fouls and put the other team into the bonus early. On the road, half of Beverley's steals would be called fouls on the opponents home court.

Excellent idea and I'd be surprised if we don't see it at some time during the preseason along with seeing Terrance Jones with the starting unit.

Even with the starters they weren't widening the lead with Beverly. If you look at the Play by Play, and yes it's not just Beverly it's also other players. But if you notice with Lin in in the 1st Quarter they built up an 11 point lead. The period when Beverly came they didn't increase the lead even with the starters. Then with second string lead dropped to 4 points. Lin back in lead increases to 8 points, Beverly back in the lead stays at 8 points. Then Canaan comes in and they lose the lead and are behind by 1. So you see that with Beverly the lead either stays the same or slowly decreases, with Lin in it actually widens. I suspect when the first string rests, if you have both Lin and Beverly in Lin will create for the offense and Beverly would hold down the defense.

Q1 04:30 Lead 11, Lin Out, Beverly In
    Q1 02:06 Lead 10, Parson/Howard/Harden Out
    Q2 06:20 Lead 4, Parson/Howard/Harden/Lin in, Beverly Out
Q3 06:32 Lead 8, Lin out, Beverly In
Q4 07:33 Lead 8, Beverly out, Canaan In
    Q4 00:00 Lead -1 End of game

Lin being asked about being a defensive specialist off the bench.

    http://youtu.be/Ndd7st74j2k?t=6m55s

Lin's response: "I think right now, defense is a strength of mine. I think I could do other things besides defense." Haha. How times have changed. Lin now sucks at defense as he's gotten more experience in the NBA.

Wait a sec. That doesn't make any sense. Think about what I just said. His defense has regressed as he's gained more experience playing defense? Hmm. I don't think that's right.
