I figured this would get lost in the other thread and people would miss out on it.

Quote:
In a year where one of the biggest blockbusters is a superhero ensemble, it’s only fitting the summer of 2012 also brings us the 20th anniversary of basketball’s equivalent of the Avengers.

Better known as the Dream Team, the 1992 U.S. Olympic men’s basketball team was composed of NBA players for the first time after an embarrassing bronze medal at the 1988 games.

And so did the team led by Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird avenge that setback, routing opponents by an average of nearly 44 points en route to the gold while captivating a world-wide audience.

NBA TV’s excellent documentary “The Dream Team,” broadcast for the first time on Wednesday, captured not only its sheer greatness, but the humanity behind such an outsized collection of personalities.

(For those who missed out, set your DVR for the next broadcast on Friday at 9:30 p.m.)

Among the many highlights:

Michael Jordan’s initial reluctance to join the team;
Magic Johnson’s unwillingness to cede alpha male status to his Air apparent;
John Stockton’s inability to be recognized, despite trying, during a stroll through Barcelona;
And of course, any number of wonderful quotes from Sir Charles Barkley. (My personal favorites: Comparing the team’s Monte Carlo training camp to spring break in the ghetto, and warning viewers never to drink beer with Larry Bird. “I had a headache for two days,” he said.)
A constant theme throughout the documentary was how we’d never seen any team like it, and likely never will again.

I think it was a bit lame. Could have used more raw footage of the practices/games, interviews and less of the commonly known details. I mean they interviewed the members of the dream team and they got 1-2 minutes each tops. michael wilbon got more facetime than clyde which was ridiculous.

almost brought tear to my eyes.

makes me HATE some of the superstars today like dwight, melo, lebron...who seem to have none of that competitve nature or desire to win with their team and beat the best..not join them.

Also guys like Wade who say they should get paid to play for USA....terrible and disgusting.

I thought it was nicely done, not lame.

Though I do agree on the other things. Coulda easily been a full 2 hours. Coulda done it in more raw documentary style, much more footage and lengthy interviews with EVERYONE. Less of the "romantic recollective" tone set to sappy background music. Its cool for a production, but does anyone really see Clyde Drexler and Patrick Ewing in that kinda way?

They don't make em' like they used to... Charismatic. Tough. Strong willed. Confident. Independent.

I agree. I hate that it made me hate him less. It was great but would have been so much better if they did double the amount of interviews. I wish athletes today had as much fire as those guys had on the court

Best part of the documentary

Any scene feature Barkling
John Stockton walking around and nobody realizing who he was until his son pointed him out.
The segment on them keeping Isiah Thomas off of the team.

Never cared for the Dream Team. I didn't even find it interesting. Much more entertaining watching the College players playing than the pro players. I don't care if other countries use pro players or not.

man, i'd pay for a documentary of the highlights of the poker games at night.

not sure what I'd rather do:
  • walk the Ramblas with Barkley for one night
  • play golf with Daly and Jordan
  • play poker with MJ, Barkley and Magic for a night (Malone is not included)
  • sit at the Monte Carlo pool with Bird and Ewing drinking budweiser and watching the parade of topless models get in and out of the pool
