SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Former NBA star Charles Barkley has been arrested on suspicion of drinking and driving.

Gilbert police Lt. Eric Shuhandler says an officer with a task force that targets drunken drivers saw a driver run a stop sign around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday in Scottsdale.

Shuhandler says Barkley declined to submit to a breath test but was given a blood test. The results were not immediately available.

After Barkley was processed, he was cited and released. Shuhandler says Barkley left the scene in a cab.

Shuhandler said there was nothing remarkable about Barkley's arrest and that it is customary to release people after they've been arrested on suspicion of DUI.

"There was nothing unusual about how he was taken into custody," Shuhandler said. "He was treated exactly like we treat anybody else."

Barkley was arrested in Scottsdale's Old Town area, one of the trendiest spots in the Phoenix metro area.

Barkley played 16 NBA seasons for the Philadelphia 76ers, Phoenix Suns and Houston Rockets, and played on the USA Olympic "Dream Team" in 1992 and 1996. He was an 11-time NBA all-star and league MVP in 1993

I am really surprised.....After years of heavy drinking and driving - I thought he would have his body in training

In all seriousness-this is a serious crime that should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law

    not a surprise.

this'll just fuel his infamy, which is probably the only reason he's on tv. his basketball analysis is disjointed and i dont know how he does this but he'll interrupt his own sentences.

Maybe he wasnt drunk... The cop could have easily mistaken his slured speech for being drunk, when he is really just an idiot. Either way, I'd rather have him off the road, I feel safer now.

This is non-story until the blood test proves he was intoxicated. Barkley did the right thing by not submitting to the breath test but of course that meant an automatic arrest.

Even if he is convicted it won't do a thing to tarnish his career. Actually, Barkley has a way of turning all of his mistakes into these "he's human just like the rest of us" moments. I foresee a 60 second apology from him on Inside The NBA followed by his announcement that he is donating $250,000 to MADD.

Hopefully they will release the results of the blood test and it will be clear if he was drunk or not.

Of course they will release the blood test results, but I don't think he was drunk.

That's because those two paid money in benjamin's not to show that stuff to the public, Barkley on the other hand doesn't even have that kind of money anymore to throw away.
