who made the decision to let mallet play or did they already know he had a season ending injury before the game?
The stupid RG3 trade set the trade up value for QB's at an unreasonable level. (sixth overall selection in the 2012 draft, plus a second-round choice that year and first-round picks in 2013 and 2014) Teams will want that again for Mariotta or Winston. A conservative team won't ever do that again, the bust risk is too great and you gut your pipeline to stay even with teams that are drafting more good players.
it's not as ridiculous as it seems. there are muscle injuries that need surgery to fix or too many months to heal but players are still able to play for at least one game.
For the sake of argument: would the Texans have had a better chance to win on Sunday with a healthy Fitzpatrick?
Almost certainly. Who knows if that would have been enough, but better QB performance would have helped out.
Not as a backup . . . but to back up money I just don't see that he has done anything to deserve Starter Money Rocket River
What makes you think he would accept that? He could easily sign a 1 or 2 year deal with any number of teams with the opportunity to earn more if he proves any good. Why would he lock himself into 5 years of an uncertain situation with little money?
he's going to want a 1 to 2 year deal. Probably 5-7M with heavy incentives for performance goals (starts, wins, pass yards, touchdowns, ratio, etc.) will do it if you're the texans. it's a worthwhile risk. we will have three qb's to vet - first round pick, mullett, timid
I'm a fairly casual fan of the NFL, but Fitz CAN NOT be kept. The jelly arm must go. Give Mallett a deal where he gets 'fair' money next season, but Texans have the option to move on at seasons end. If they don't move on, he gets a few more years. Who starts this week?
Given the way our GM makes selections, I'd say it's not as big a risk. If we're gonna have a 40% bust rate on our picks anyways, why not take a shot by trading multiple picks?
fitzie for the next 2 games, then Boom, savage for the colts. no film, ha, take that, luck! i got nothing.
Because if you trade up to #2 and that guy busts, you also don't have a shot at a first rounder in 2016 and 2017, effectively no 1st round pick for 3 years. Clowney's lack of performance so far aside, if you don't keep stocking starters with your first round picks and teams in your division do, you fall behind. Would you have wanted to miss a shot at Watt to have drafted Blaine Gabbert? (Newton was the #1 pick but Gabbert was the second QB)
OK, let's count. 1) Matt Schaub - 2011 2) Matt Leinart - 2011 3) Ryan Mallett - 2014 Gee, doesn't seem like a lot when you write it all out. Compare with Arizona: Derek Anderson - Concussion - 2010, Max Hall - Separated Shoulder - 2010, Kevin Kolb - Concussion - 2011, Kevin Kolb - Rib Injury - 2012, (Derek Anderson was also constantly injured in 2011-2012), Carson Palmer - Torn ACL - 2014.
yep, that worked so well for Washington, trading up for the best QB available. also worked for the jags, picking the best QB available. washington drafted 2 QBs with their first 3 picks, and right now both are terrible.
I know this was against a really bad Titans team but I can't help but think the Fitzpatrick we saw tonight would have been better than an injured Ryan Mallet. Plus the Bengals almost lost to the Bucs.
