It's been a draining weekend for me to say the least. Friday morning, my dad texted me that he called 911 to take mom to hospital. Needless to say, I left work to meet him at the ER.

He told me that when he went to get her out of bed, she was sitting up but developed a blank stare when he helped her up, and eventually had to be laid back down, and was unresponsive to him. When EMS took her, she had a bp of 85/40. In ER, they could not get her bp up, and discovered she had blood in her stool, but they were not overly concerned as it was dark and not bright red.

They released her to PCU to wait for an endoscopy. While waiting in PCU that evening, she got clammy, unresponsive, and rapid response had to be called in to stabilize her. Nurses were not monitoring her bp, which made no sense to me, but that is another story.

After rapid response stabilized her, the doctor took her in for endoscopy and found a large duodenal ulcer, but it was not bleeding, so he prescribed meds to take care of it.

I went home at 8 that night because all seemed ok, but i got a call at 11 that they were taking mom to PCU because she was bleeding red blood and vomitting clots.

Once there, rapid response team was called in again. She had lost a lot of blood, and they turned her on her side causing her to aspirate and cardiac arrest.

The doctor came out and told us they were going to try to revive for only five more minutes, and it didn't look good, preparing us for her passing.

The response team managed to bring her back and the doc put 8 clips on the ulcer.

She's since stabilized, but still in ICU and another endoscopy has been ordered for today.

Aside from needing to vent, I'd like to ask for prayers from CF for my mom and dad.

FT, I cannot even imagine what that feels like. Prayers sent your way.

Once you get to a good spot (or as good of a spot as can be considering the situation) speak with the case managers about your moms treatment. Get people involved.

I remember taking care of many folks with GI bleeds similar to that one. All, the blood, vomiting clots, tons and tons of blood transfusions...it's a horrible experience that leaves you feeling helpless; I'm grateful I'm not in that profession anymore. My condolences FT, I hope you yours come thru this okay.
