Creating four deals that would make sense for Magic, trading partners By Tom Haberstroh How much is Dwight Howard worth? We might find out soon enough if he's traded. I know what you're thinking: "Haven't we heard that for the past two years?" While that might be true, it seems more likely than ever that he'll be dealt. The Orlando Magic front office has cleaned house by handing pink slips to general manager Otis Smith and head coach Stan Van Gundy, and there's a lot of uncertainty in the organization. And another season of Howard's hokey-pokey commitment might be too much to swallow. We know Howard's credentials. He's probably one of the five best players in the NBA who also just happens to be entering his prime years as a basketball commodity. When engaged (and he might not have been all last season), he's easily the best defensive big man in the league, patrolling the pick-and-roll game, protecting the rim and gobbling up every miss in sight. So you're getting a perennial defensive player of the year candidate who also happens to average 20 points per game. Here's a list of centers who can offer you that combination: Dwight Howard. That's it. As long as he's happy (which seems to be of utmost importance to his employer), he could be one of the two or three most valuable assets in the league. So who would be interested? Just about everybody. Who would actually have the pieces to make it work? Here are four destinations that make sense. http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/stor...potential-dwight-howard-trades-make-sense-nba ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Can somone please post the rest of this article....
I'd be curious to see how Dallas could sign Lopez, who is not their own free agent, and then trade him to Orlando. That is, unless we are talking about a February deal. And don't forget about the little detail of New Jersey's right to match.
Almost all of those trades are horrible. Those teams don't want Orlando's garbage. 1. Lakers already don't want to give up Bynum, but yet they also give up Gasol for Howard along with Davis and Turkoglu. I actually like that deal for the Lakers. 2. Clippers are not sending all of those players for the fillers, I'm sure they would jump on all that salary dumping. 3. That Mavs might work for them. 4. I guess it's ok for the Rockets to get screwed over the most, as usual.
If I were the clipps and the magic, the deals make the most sense. Howard and Richardson for griffin, jordan, gomes, and bledsoe makes a lot of sense. Orlando gets a big name,a young center, and a guard. Clippers get a couple of guys a lot closer to cp3 prime. Plus jordan is signed already.
Not a fan of Richardson, the Clippers would need a stretch four to pair with Dwight. The Clippers would need to get Ryan anderson included...
Rockets chance of resigning him would be very slim. If they were a title contender with the trade then it would be okay but they wouldnt be. Rockets shouldnt give up parsons and the knicks pick. Maybe one but definitely not both. It wouldnt matter if the Lakers or Clippers make an offer like that cause the Rockets cant beat that.
The Lakers and Clippers has the best deal for the Magic. At least the Magic get a potential all-star player in Bynum or Griffin which also a 20-10 guy. Sad to said the Rockets deal is not attractive at all to the Magic.
Sometimes I wonder about these writers/reporters. The Mavs deal won't work. They can't sign DWill and sign Lopez. If they sign Lopez, that means DWill is re-signing in New Jersey long term or is going somewhere else long term. And if they try to trade for Dwight in February, they'll never get a commitment from him with DWill locked down somewhere else. Now, they could possibly do a 3-way with the Clippers or Lakers in that case sending Dwight to LA and taking back Blake or Pau but why? Orlando would probably prefer to have those players to Lopez and company. Secondly, once DWill signs somewhere Orlando loses trade leverage, tremendous trade leverage. They will only get any sort of value by trading Dwight to a team he wants to be traded to because if it's not his team, then he will surely not re-sign but instead will walk in free agency. That is why a trade rental of Dwight where Orlando gets max value MUST take place before July 1. If it takes place after July 1, it will have to have Dwight's approval and commitment to extend for Orlando to get anything close to the value they could get by trading him for the best deal on the table before free agency begins and DWill is locked up somewhere or at least committed for next season. Secondly, the Lakers aren't gonna give up both Bynum and Gasol without Dwight committing for the next 5 years. They're not gonna gamble like that. They will give up one guy or the other and they may trade both guys for Dwight if they can get back a little bit more than just Dwight. Hence the 3-way talks involving Scola, etc. But they're not gonna throw away both guys for Dwight and Hedo without Dwight being committed to play there for the next 5 seasons. And Dwight doesn't want to commit without being able to be paired up with another superstar, preferrably a point guard, that is his age so he can play with him for many a year. So, the Lakers are going to have to convince him that once Kobe leaves, they'll sign a top notch point guard. Could happen but those are the stipulations. Lakers aren't gonna rent Dwight. Thirdly, this dude is not throwing our #14 or Patterson or Morris in his trade deal. That doesn't make sense. Our #14 or whatever we trade our #14 for, will likely have to go to Orlando along with at least one or posssibly both of Patterson and Morris. And Orlando would probably prefer Dally's contract to be able to cut over getting tied to Scola's deal for another 3 years. Very amateurish trade suggestions indeed.
Getting Howard gives us a real chance of signing DWill and even if we don't sign DWill we can likely get Dragic to stay with Lowry gone and a legit superstar on the roster. A starting lineup of Dragic/Lee/Turk/DMo/Howard is solid and depending on how much we pay Dragic and Lee we would still have cap space to fill other holes. At worst Howard leaves after a year and we go into a true rebuild mode.
i would do it, but we'd have to find a way to get under the cap enough to offer a max contract to deron williams. it's the only way to ensure howard isn't a rental. while landing howard is one way to ensure that getting under the cap will ensure that williams signs.
Most the Clippers should give is this: Griffin, Jordan, Mo Williams (has a player option that he'll likely exercise, which would make him an expiring contract) for Howard and Hedo... No other team would offer more than that...
Probably thrown in Ryan Gomes whose on the final year of his deal to make the salaries work... So it would be: Griffin, Jordan, Williams, and Gomes for Howard and Hedo... Clippers keep Bledsoe...
