This might be true. Because if you are watching a game with me, I'm not trying to entertain you at all. I'm just watching the game. I will talk about the game during a stoppage of play and make one-off comments during the game, but only because I just do it naturally and not because I want to start a dialog.
In a 3 hour football game, the ball is in play for approximately 12 minutes. That's 2 hours and 48 minutes where there is nothing substantial going on - plenty of time to have conversations or not stare at the screen watching players huddle or walk to the new spot or whatever.
The best is when you go to a game with a foul-mouthed friend, he's cursing up a storm during the game with his personal commentary, and then some parent with a kid stands up and gives him a stern lecture about cursing during a game with families around. And, said friend squirms in his seat afterwards. Good times.
The only sport where it's ok to not talk is women's volleyball, except for the occasional "daaayum...!"
Me and my friends yell and berate the opposing team through the television during Texans games. Haymitch, you can't come.
Ok at first I thought OP was just uptight. But im currently watching the Redskins-Seahawks game with a guy who wants to analyze every incompletion, every penalty, every run.... Predicting a group beatdown before halftime.
