What are your top 5 Best and Worst Cover songs? Historically I've never been much of a fan of covers unless they are truly done with a LOT of originality. this website says that these 9 songs are better than the originals - I'd actually agree with some of them (but definitely not all of them) http://www.answers.com/article/1208...param2=null¶m5=1058268¶m6=30652918641 Higher Ground - Red Hot Chili Peppers (Stevie Wonder) Jolene - White Stripes (Dolly Parton) California Sun - Ramones (Joe Jordon) Rock 'n' Roll - Janes Addiction (Velvet Underground) I Fought The Law - The Clash (Bobby Fuller) With Arms Wide Open - Dave Grohl (Creed) Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley (Leonard Cohen) Love Buzz - Nirvana (Shocking Blue) Hurt - Johnny Cash (Nine Inch Nails) Here is MY Top 5 Best Cover songs list: California Sun - Ramones Hurt - Johnny Cash I fought the Law - The Clash All Along the Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix (Bob Dylan) Sweet Jane - Cowboy Junkies (Velvet Underground) Wild Horses - The Sundays (Rolling Stones) Here is MY Top 5 Worst Cover songs list: Strawberry Fields Forever - Candyflip (Beatles) I will always Love You - Whitney Houston (Dolly Parton) - of course this song was fairly bad to begin with American Pie - Madonna Kats In the Cradle - Ugly Kid Joe (Harry Chapin) The Way You Do The Things You Do - UB40 (The Temptations) .
Yes. I also prefer Cash's version of One over U2's too. And, he does a great cover of Mercy Seat, though I like Nick Cave's also. And, I like that Johnny Cash listens to all these guys. Disagree on Buckley's Hallelujah. About a billion people have covered Hallelujah by now, but I'll stick with the original. Leonard Cohen's voice can't compete, and he's nothing special on instrumentation either. Something feels more heartfelt about it coming out of Leonard Cohen, and they might be some meta-property I'm assigning to it because he wrote it, but there it is. I don't think I feel that way about other covers because the subject matter is perhaps not as central to the writer's identity. I know in the case of Mercy Seat, the subject matter seems more dear to Johnny Cash's heart than it does to Nick Cave's because of Cash's long-held interest in punishment, sin, God, redemption, etc.
