What's your greatest sports story about run-ins with professional or former professional athletes? This past Sunday, James Starks (a rookie, sixth round pick our of Buffalo..would have been taken sooner, but missed his entire Senior year with a shoulder injury) got the bulk of the carries for the Packers. He had 17 carries for 73 yards. He's got potential to break out over the rest of the season, in my opinion. He's got size, speed, and decent hands. He may be TOO tall to play running back in the NFL, though, at 6'2". Anyways, in high school, he was a quarterback/kick returner for his team. We played them the first week of my junior season, and I made the tackle on him on the opening kickoff. It wasn't a great play or anything, I just tripped him. Now that he's had a slight bit of NFL success (not really anything, but he's garnering some buzz), I can say that that is probably my best sports story (other than literally almost running into Moses Malone at one of his son's football games about 7 years ago).
That's pretty cool to think about. I bet a lot of high school football players in Texas have similar stories.
That's what I figured. I didn't play in Texas, or a region of the country that is exactly a hotbed for NFL/college talent, so I think it's even cooler to me. I bet a lot of people on here have similar stories. It'd be cool to hear them.
I beat Brent Price in a game of Pop-A-Shot to win tickets to a Vancouver Grizzlies vs. Sacramento Kings game.
One of my favorites was finishing 2nd in nationals for our United Kingdom softball team. We tied the first place team 4-1 in round robin play, and had given them their loss, we were slated to play them in the championship on Sunday but it got rained out. That was ok though, we drank a CRAP load of beer instead.....lol.... I was working in Manchester and playing on the company softball team, used to get accused of faking an American accent....hehe......got recruited by the city team, played SS for them, and went camping down in Nationals in London... I played lots of softball in the states, but the most fun was over in the UK, they just had more fun. DD
I once played a few pickup basketball games w/ former NFL stud DT Sam Adams (he went to Cy-Creek; I went to Cy-Fair). Dude was a beast. I don't recall him being all that great at basketball, but he was so damn big/strong, all he did was get it down low and lay it up. I only guarded him for maybe 2-4 plays over the few months and games that we played together. I don't recall anyone ever really stopping him (certainly not me), and some of the guys that played were also football players. I also played a few pickup games w/ Ike Nuwonko (sp.). Also a Cy-Fair guy who I believe got a scholarship w/ UCLA, but never amounted to much. He was a stud in HS ball though.
