Yao is doing post tournament conditioning training 2.5 hours everyday. He never stops to rest!

Yao Ming was invited as a honorary guest at the signing ceremony of a 3-year strategic partnership between NBA, NuSports and Sohu.com today in Beijing. The partnership is about Nusports (a dotcom/multi-media company formed by ex Sina.com Co-Chairman/founder Daniel Chiang) and sohu.com will supply and enrich multi-media contents of NBA China.com.

Yao Ming did a Q&A there at the press conference. I'll try to dig it out from nusports.com and see if there are interesting stuff for you guys. Stay tune.

In summary:

He had good rest after the World Championship.

When asked every Chinese basketball fan wants to ask him a question, how many questions he had to answer, he said it will be astronomical. Then the MC told him that during the live broadcast (of the Chinese games) of the World Championship, CCTV viewership has broken the figure of 370M.

When asked how he felt after World Championship, he said China has to summarize and plan for the future, and he himself sees alot of hope for the future; he said the national team has to work very hard for the next 2 years, and he promised to bring much better basketball games to the fans (during the 2008 Olympics)

When asked whether he surfs over the Internet after winning or losing a game, he said he surfed over the Internet, more after a win, less after a loss. He said he sort of afraid to surf the net after a loss, as he would recieve disses and bashes by net fans.

When asked how he helped promoting Chinese culture in NBA or USA, he said he did not do it deliberately. He just kept his own habits as much as possible. He would sometimes take his team mates to Chinese dinner when playing out of Houston. Alot of his team mates are interested to learn more about Chinese customs and culture, and he would try to explain/teach his team mates. By doing so, he thought it helps to improve the interpersonal relationship between him and his team mates.

When asked how he felt about Patrick Ewing's resignation, he said he regretted to learn that Ewing is leaving. He said he had learnt alot from Ewing in the past 3 years. He respected Ewing's decision to quit so as to have more time with his family, and he thanked Ewing for all he had taught him.

The MC who is a CCTV5 sports program host, told him that upon a recent Shaquille O'neal's interview, when asked who is the best centre in NBA, Shaq hesitated for a while before saying he is still the best. This was different from 3 years back; when asked who is the best centre in NBA, Shaq immediately said "Me". The MC asked Yao Ming what made Shaq so hesitant now? Is it because Yao Ming has exceeded Shaq in terms of statistics this past season ?

Yao Ming said he thought Shaq was hesitant because Shaq is aging. He said sooner or later he will be the same. He could only keep working hard such that that day will come much later.

The MC then asked Yao Ming, now that he had exceeded Shaq in terms of his personal stats, how he wants to beat Shaq in the new season ? Yao Ming said he wishes the Rockets can exceed the Miami Heats in terms of team results for the new season.

well I hope Yao isn't training too much... he needs down days too... im not talking no work out... but he does need to have a few days a week where the work outs are not as high intensity or shorter...

there is a point where you can over train, make your conditioning worse or actually burn yourself out...

China needs more overseas experience, says Yao

BEIJING, Sept 5 (Reuters) - Houston Rockets centre Yao Ming believes more of his Chinese team mates need to gain experience abroad for the national team to be competitive at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, state media reported on Tuesday.

China finished a disappointing 11th at the world championships in Japan after being knocked out 95-64 by eventual runners-up Greece last week.

Yao, who averaged a tournament-high 25.3 points and virtually carried China into the second round, told state TV that several of his team mates should join more competitive leagues overseas.

"As the 2008 Olympics are drawing near, we should send abroad the likes of Yi Jianlian and Wang Shipeng as soon as possible in a bid to raise our level in the short term," the 7ft 5in NBA All-Star centre said.

"Even if our basketballers fail to play as regulars, we still could benefit at least from their training. I played as a substitute 10 minutes per game initially, too. It depends on your will and work."

Yao lamented his team mates' lack of strength and courage after China crashed out of the worlds, and remarked in media reports last week that Chinese basketball was too inward-looking.

But he conceded it was "impossible" for domestic clubs hungry for national success to send key players to foreign leagues, Xinhua news agency reported.

China's basketball officials, concerned that foreign careers might interrupt national duty, have also been reluctant to allow young talent to seek their fortunes in overseas leagues.

Yi Jianlian, touted as China's next Yao Ming and courted by several NBA clubs, declined to enter this year's NBA draft after China Basketball Association (CBA) Director Li Yuanwei voiced concerns about young Chinese players warming benches in the NBA.

Menk Bateer and Wang Zhizhi, the other two towers in China's NBA "Great Wall", were characterised by regular transfers and little game time.

His NBA aspirations clashed with China duties, leading to his sacking after failing to join the national team during the Asian Games in 2002. Wang returned to China earlier this year.

Wang and the rest of Yao's team mates will return to domestic league clubs for the kickoff of the CBA 2006/2007 season in October, before being called up for November's Asian Games.

Yao has been exempted from the Asian Games, Xinhua reported.

Yao Ming tells teammates to review Basketball Worlds

Chinese center Yao Ming said Tuesday that his national colleagues should not let slip from their mind the lessons they drew at the World Men's Basketball Championship in Japan.

Yao, set to leave for the Houston Rockets for the upcoming NBA season, helped China advance to the knockout stage of the recently-concluded basketball championship.

"Our CBA (China Basketball Association) players should remember about the tournament and draw lessons from it," Yao told the state-owned CCTV (China Central Television) sports channel Tuesday.

"It is hard to do pioneering work but it is even harder to keep the accomplishments. We have a good start, and I hope they never dump what they have learned from the championship in the less competitive CBA league."

The Chinese men's team reached the last 16 at the championship but only found them thrashed by European champions Greece 95-64 in the first knockout round on Aug. 27.

Domestic media said after the game that the Chinese players are unable to match foreign players in physical quality, tactics and will to succeed.

Yao, who had said during the Japan campaign that Chinese basketball was like making a cart behind closed door, suggested more players go abroad to collect more experience.

"As the 2008 Olympics are drawing near, we should send abroad the likes of Yi Jianlian and Wang Shipeng as soon as possible in a bid to raise our level in short term.

"Even our basketballers fail to play as regulars, we still could benefit at least from their training sessions. I myself played as substitute ten minutes per game initially, too. It depends on your will and work."

But it is impossible for the domestic clubs to send their key players to foreign leagues due to the demand to national success, admitted Yao.

It will serve as expedient for the Chinese side to see over 30 international games of high level while training in Europe next spring, deputy-director of the Chinese Basketball Administrative Center Hu Jiashi told the China Sports Daily on Sept. 1.

Yao, the leading player who scored an average of 25.3 points in his six games at the championship, was the only current NBA player from China.

His national teammate Wang Zhizhi, the first Chinese player to play in the NBA, returned home recently after four years of exile in the United States. He will rejoin the Chinese military club, the Bayi Rockets in the upcoming CBA season.

Chinese players will go in for club competitions which kick off in October before they are called up once again at the end of November for the Asian Games basketball events, which Yao will skip.

I'm wondering what that dog is doing in that picture. Dogs of that size are supposed to be prohibited in Beijing, or at least they were when I was there last winter.

I thought the rule has changed a bit. When I was there, a dog that size would require a license.

As I posted here earlier rebuking what Fran Blinebury said that Yao Ming will return to Houston on September 6, he will leave Beijing for Shanghai these 2 days, and will be joining his parents and girl friend there. He will not leave for Houston until after September 12, which is his 26th birthday.

I am sure that dog is not Yao's dinner. But it is not a stereotype to say they eat dog in China. Correct me if I am wrong but China is the world's greatest consumer of dog meat, eating as many as 20 million dogs a year.
