QB - Fine RB - Need a feature back. Not necessarily Saquon but a guy who fits the system and can be fed the pill. Pierce is, at best, a short yardage guy in this system unfortuantely. FB - Fine. WR - They have quantity but what quality is there outside of Nico (who needs to be extended) and Tank? On top of that I could see Woods being a cap casualty. Definitely have to invest a draft pick in the top 3 rounds to the group IMO. TE - Schultz is option 1 but I am ok with somebody like Colby Parkinson and adding a Cade Stover in the draft to bring along. OL - They need health. I'd like to see what they have at LG and RT first but its probably a good idea to bring in some bodies at those 2 spots particularly. DL - Probably need #1. Most likely scenario is Greenard and Rankins return and a high draft pick (Murphy II?) is brought in. LB - Interested to see what happens with Cashman but there is lots of smoke with Patrick Queen. CB - I think theyll bring in a free agent to play opposite Stingley. I worry that Nelson's play and his age isnt the right fit for this team. Dont want to invest lots of money is a player on the back end of their career. S - This is where I think theyll spend some coin in free agency. Lots of good safeties on the market potentially. I am looking at Xavier McKinney.
Really really on board with everything you are saying here. Hoping for either Saquon and running defense back or a Chris jones/madubuike type and bringing back Barnett instead of greenard.
I finally saw a contract value on the Weeks Contract. $1,152,500 from Spotrac. Offense QB - Good for 24, lose 2 in 25 RB - Pierce. Need a couple. FB - Beck and Hairston, Beck last season UC. WR - Woods, Metchie, Collins, Dell, Hutchinson, Matthews and Bachman? Good. TE - Jordan, Quinoriano. Need at least one. OL - Tunsil, Howard, Mason, Ky Green, Scruggs, Kd Green, Patterson, Broeker and Zieror. We have sufficiency and numbers. Defense DT - Collins?, Hinish? Big Need DE - Horton? Big Need LB - WAJ, Harris, Sandersm To'oTo'o and Sanders. Nead more. CB - Stingley. Big Need. S - Ward, Stewart, Pitre. Need more. Special Teams - Weeks LS. Need Fairbairn K and Johnson P signed. We have a lot of FA talent that has to be re-signed or replaced.
I use this sheet in spotrac https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/houston-texans/yearly/cap/ click on the multi-year summary tab (it helps put each position in context IMHO)
Seeing what the Chiefs starting CBs did in the Super Bowl makes me want the Texans to draft another top cover corner. It gives the defense so much more flexibility to cover up other weaknesses.
The problem with many of these is it doesn't tell you what holes need to be filled. If you need 20 players, $60M doesn't go too far.
It does show who is signed & when their contract expires. You would probably need to know player performance (very subjective) & team chemistry as well. But to each their own....
You gotta think that some of those 20 spots will be filled by 6 or 7 draft picks and 3 or 4 UDFA's. Plus fairly cheap Kicker/Punter/Long Snapper positions. All of these guys will cost around 15 mil. So this leaves you 45 mil to fill 10 spots. You can fill 5 of those spots for around 10 mil. that leaves you 35 mil to fill the other 5 spots. You could also cut Woods to create another 3-4 mil (I didn't look this up. So that should give you around 40 mil to fill those 5 spots. Say you spent 20 mil on Wilkins and 6 mil on Harrison. That would leave you say 24 mil to fill the last 3 spots. With that money you could add Sneed for 12 mil and Swift for 6-7 mil. This doesn't even include going to the bank of Tunsil if you need more money. The money/draft picks are there to have a transformative offseason. I'm looking forward to seeing how Caserio/Ryans navigate this offseason.
You've got a 5-7 year window to win a championship before Stroud gets to expensive these are my FA guys and you setup the contracts where you can get out after 3 years. Caserio is pretty good at this. They're going to have to eat Howard's contract next year. But after that getting out of the contract won't be to expensive.
I'll try again to wrap mt head around the numbers, I think the simplest way is to assign a starter and backup to each of the 22 positions on offense and defense and add three ST only players to bring us to 47 players. There is a 51 man roster which is important for tax Cap purposes as well as another higher cap which includes other elements as well. But we'll just call anyone over 51 wild cards with no positional significance for purposes of evaluating team needs in 2024. No star - no concern 1 star - minor concern 2 star - low concern 3 star - moderate concern 4 star - significant concern 5 star - big problem Offense *QB Stroud and Mills - Backup is only concern in 2025 or if CJ is out for an extended time. ****RB Pierce - Need another this season **FB Beck and Hairston - ? WR Collins, Dell, Woods, Metche. Hutchinson and Matthews - Good. Add would be a luxurie. ***TE Quitoriano and Jordan - I don't know. ***T Tunsil, Howard and Zierer - Even with Tunsil, Howard's health must be addressed ***G Mason, Ky Green, Kd Green and Broeker - Depth and injury still a concern **C Scruggs and Patterson - mostly depth concern Short two bodies Defense *****DT Collins and Hinish - two bodies short and need quality ***DE Sanders and Horton - need two bodies or three if WAJ doesn't play DE **OLB Anderson and Haynes - I don't understand this so I assume at leadt WAJ is playing DE. Haynes is a complete mystery ****LB Harris, To"oTo"o and Hansen - 2 or 3 bodies needed ****CB Stingley and Holman - 2 bodies needed ***FS Ward and Murray - ? ** SS Pitre and Stewart - need 8 or 9 bodies ST Need K and P Need 12 or 13 bodies to fill out a team. ***** DT **** RB LB CB *** TE T G DE FS ** FB C SS * QB _ WR
Offense 30 QB- Set, probably need to add a cheap vet. - 3 RB- Bring back Pierce/FA/Draft pick - 4 FB- Hairston/Jordan- 2 TE- Schultz/Draft pick/Jordan/Either Saubert or Quintano -3 WR's Collins/Dell/Metchie/Hutch/High draft pick/Cheap FA or low draft pick- 6 OT'- Tunsil/Howard/Zierer/Bring back Jones/4th rd or higher draft pick - 5 OG- Mason/Green's/Scruggs/Broeker -5 C- Patterson/Scruggs/Kendrick Green - 2 Defense 31 WA/Barnett/Draft pick/Horton/Sanders/Haynes - 6 DT's Collins/Draft pick/FA signing/Davis/Tart/Hinish - 6 ILB Too Too/Hansen/ Draft pick - 3 OLB Cashman/Harris/Too Too/ Hewitt - 3 CB's Stingley/Hollman/Draft pick early//draft pick late/ 2 FA's or bring back Nelson/King. - 6 S Ward/Petrie who I would move to nickle CB/ High draft pick/FA Houston-Carson. - 4 ST's Weeks/Fairbarin/Draft pick punter - 3 Priority draft picks Offense WR/OT/TE, signing a RB in FA, this will help improve the run game. Defense- High priority- CB/DT/Edge Defense Lower priority- LB, but still needed if Ryans wants to improve the front 7.
Sneed will be so hot this offseason the bidding war would be crazy. He's already casting doubt on the Chiefs being able to pay him enough.

I'm with you on that. I hope Quinyon is around at #23....many mocks now have him going around #19. Quinyon played mostly zone coverage during the season; but showed he can play press coverage at the Senior Bowl. He made many look like they were bogged down in quicksand. My thinking *Two shut down corners allows the safeties to help out with the run * O-line needs to get healthy and earn there pay *sign Patrick Queen helps our run stoppage (replaces Perryman) *Re-sign Cashman and Greenard *Re-sign Dalton Shultz or sign Noah Fant We got to give C J Stroud some weapons. Dude took us to the second round with smoke and mirrors. Receivers were always hurt with exception of Nico. Offensive line was decimated the entire season. The running game was below average with only Singletary as a viable option. I have us taking a CB, DT, and two receivers in the 4 first picks. Some people just don't realize what we have in Stroud.
People who do realize what we have in Stroud also realize what we don't have back on D after Free Agency. You have to give him a chance to get the ball back to do his thing.
You are not going to fill all the holes on both offense and defense. And drafting guys doesn't payoff day one.....see drafting us Reader or Pancake Hopkins Nor does bringing in free agents.....see us bringing in the #9 best guard (per PFF) in Shaq T'Vondre Sweat weighs 360 and is believed to actually weigh more; but bringing him in doesn't guarantee our interior defense will stop the run. Maybe he has a weight problem and can't move well anymore, injuries happen more often, gets stymied by pro O-line men. Quinyon Mitchell has the size at 6'0", speed (track scholarship), was great in zone during the college season (yes, vs small school competition); but was easily the best CB at the Senior bowl in 1 vs 1 (going against some of the best college wide receivers coming out). I'm not impressed with the corners coming out......would stick with Nelson as the better option, with the exception of Quinyon Mitchell at where we draft. To me he has Deon Sanders lighter vibes or potential). --------- I disagree with you, the Texans have to get Stroud some weapons now or he might get killed out there. And he has shown he can take your team to the second round of the playoffs with virtually nothing. Quinyon Mitchell......this guy ranks him 4th best. If Stingly is shutting down half the field and Quinyon the other half (last year they just attacked Nelson on the other side), you can then devote more personnel to the run game.
