NO! Leave Brent Barry in the broadcast booth!!!! SVG is a good coach but shouldn't be allowed to be a personnel man.
What a difference a life choice can affect your legacy. SVG was offered the Warriors job, but he turned it down because he also wanted to be GM. He turned down the Warriors. Kerr was going to go to the Knicks and was ready to sign a contract. Warriors contacted Kerr after being turned down by SVG. WOW. SVG could be a Hall of Fame coach if he took the Warriors job. Now Kerr is going into the HOF
Just this morning SI's Chris Mannix tweeted that talks between the Golden State Warriors and Stan Van Gundy were "moving towards a deal". Later, Yahoo's Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the Detroit Pistons was offering Van Gundy control over basketball decisions and suddenly and, at the very least, that has given the former Orlando Magic coach something to think about. Van Gundy has expressed a strong interest in the Warriors' opening, but it's immediately unclear how intrigued he is with the pursuit of Pistons owner Tom Gores. The Pistons have a far less appealing roster, but the chance for Van Gundy to build his own organization is a challenge the Warriors can't offer him NBA source: Stan Van Gundy told the Warriors he wanted total control of basketball decisions. They declined. He could get that in DET. — Tim Kawakami (@timkawakami) May 13, 2014 However, Wojnarowski is also not ruling out the Warriors re-visiting Steve Kerr as a candidate if his talks with the New York Knicks break down although Ian Begley of ESPN New York reported just last night that, "...it appears that Kerr is deciding between coaching the Knicks and returning to work as a broadcaster for TNT."
He destroyed that team. His original vision was putting JSmoove, Monroe, and Drummond together. That was clearly a disaster in the making. Their current roster doesn't make much sense either. It's like he loves collecting bigs that can somewhat pass but can't shoot. And with Ish Smith and Reggie Jackson in the backcourt I guess the guards don't need to be able to shoot either. Oh, and Stanley Johnson starts at SF. Bricks galore.
As someone who wanted & liked Van Gundy & Thibodeau, ... meh, they're nothing special now. S.Van Gundy, J.Van Gundy, Thibodeau, Clifford, that whole tree, yesteryear's news. Hawks are tanking, they aren't hiring him. Hornets just fired his former assistant Steve Clifford; probably not hiring him. Grizzlies kept Bickerstaff Knicks hired Fizdale Magic, nope. Suns hired Igor Kokoskov Bucks? Raptors? May have to join his brother in the TV (or radio) booth.
One candidate expected to be strongly considered for a role in a revamped Pistons front office is Brent Barry, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. The Warriors attempted to hire Barry in a scouting position last summer but ran into complications because of his ongoing TV commitments, league sources told ESPN's Zach Lowe. The two sides even discussed a potential part-time arrangement that would have allowed Barry to fulfill his TNT duties, with the understanding he would come to Golden State full time upon the expiration of his TV contract, but the talks fell through, sources told Lowe.
Gundys & Thibodeous... Graduates of the 90s Knicks system. All dinosaurs and on the verge of extinction from modern game.
SVG's parting gift to Detroit is the remaining years of Blake Griffin's salary. And the fact they are STILL paying Josh Smith money!
Warriors got lucky that they didn’t get stuck with Van Gundy. Doubt they flourish under him and Durant probably never ends up there.
That's one way to look at it, but then it assumes anyone could have turned around what Mark Jackson started. One of the big keys to Warriors was Kerr having to convince Curry that while he could run a good PnR, they should largely abandon it and get the team moving more. Had SVG took the job, the other way to look at it is that the Warriors never really turn into the Warriors as we know them now,,,and probably don't beat Lebron that first year of Kerr, and maybe don't even get past the Rockets in the WCF, and we go to the finals (and Harden wins that close MVP race with Curry under SVG vs Kerr). And they don't get past OKC the second year, so don't get Durant for the third.
What a terribly ran organization. Wasn't Blake tryna sh** on the Clipps for being a worse franchise than Detroit....?
True though. The Van Gundy coaching tree and coaching style just doesn't match up with the pace and space game today. I think it CAN adapt, but SVG was a terrible GM. I think big guys like Drummond can be effective in the league today...but not with Blake Griffin on the team alongside him. You pretty much are allowed one big shotblocking-defensive centric center on the team and even then he has to understand that certain teams, certain games, he won't play much...but you need him in your back pocket. EDIT: BTW Clint doesn't apply here, he is the blueprint for the modern center though. Extremely agile, able to guard perimeter players at an average level so can switch easily, still capable of blocking shots and rebounding. This is why he will be worth the max in today's game, not many centers can do what he does. I think the Jazz show that these kind of centers can still be immensely effective. But SVG tried to build a 90s team with all the tough hard nosed players on it Only way out for the Pistons is to trade Drummond now. He's the only player that teams would give up a lot for, because Blake is about to be a toxic contract for that team. Also. HAving a Coach be a GM is always a bad decision, coaches usually think of how they can win the next game while GMs think how they can win for the next 5 years.
