I see, they tried to do the deal before midnight and other teams were dealing before midnight as well, but because this deal would've been affected by the new CBA they did not allow it and changed it. This makes morey look bad in front of other free agents and may cost us nene. I cannot blame Morey for trying to get him.
Yeah if Morey changed the offer after the fact that's obviously some piss poor handling. Seems to me they tried to sneak something by the league and it didn't work. Also seems like an entirely resolvable situation unless Morey has plans for that extra money.
Really? I can't tell if you're being sarcastic. But if you're not and you want Morey gone a week after he added a top 10 player because he couldn't re-sign a bench big, that's completely asinine.
Wow, someone checked. This entire thing is really weird because they agreed to the deal before the new CBA but because this deal is affected by the new CBA they didn't allow it. It seems to me like someone at the NBA is checking everything morey does to make sure. They did not like the way he took advantage of the old cba.
Honestly I was surprised they offered him anything more then two years. He should still be happy with 3 at this stage of his career
He's so good for us. And that's just on the court. In the locker room he's the heart of our veteran mojo.
I don't buy this narrative. The rockets have multiple lawyers that review the CBA. This is too easy of an error.
So, I asked Nate Duncan and Danny Leroux of the Dunc'on Basketball Podcast about this via twitter. The question is about the interpretation of the over 38 rule. I think the rule talks about for the relevant contract, a player cannot be over 38 as of the start of the season. What the Rockets apparently tried to argue is that the season actually starts on July 1 of each year but Duncan and Leroux both think that the CBA's language is pretty clear that the start of the season means October 1 of each year. Being born on September 13, 1982. Nene would be under 38 as of July 1, 2020, but over 38 as of October 1, 2020. I don't think this is a case of the Rockets trying to pull one over Nene. They would have happily paid him $15M if allowed to. Besides, Nene has his own agents who know how to read the CBA. They are probably trying to take advantage of a possible ambiguity in the CBA but the NBA obviously disagreed.
