Haha...why? Presti finally opens the bank for a spending spree and they end up with Dion Waiters and Nick Collison.

WHY?: My guess is that the Thunder owed Collison a favor for the unique, team-friendly extension he signed back in 2010, when he was one of the league's best role players.

More interestingly . . . HOW?: Mark Deeks explains it beautifully here (and predicted!) how the Thunder could utilize an obscure CBA provision to extend Collison (again!) beyond the normal constraints of the salary cap:

Ever worked in a company for 15 years and they gave you a retirement bonus package?

    This is it.

Look, if Ben Gordon can get 2 years of similar money,

this actually could be a better deal.

collison hasn't averaged anything for the last 6 years in okc, so I am not sure what's the issue.

clearly his importance to the thunder doesn't reside on a stat-based metric. The same goes for Kendrick Perkins for that matter.

in general defenders are the worst performing players based on stats alone.

These next 2 games are going to be important for their chances to make the playoffs. They play the Pelicans back to back. And it looks like Durant is gonna miss the next game.

The how is interesting... though less so (or more so, depending on how much you care) when you realize he is literally the only player in the league that such a move would apply to currently.

The Why to me is a bit confusing. At least your why. Did Collison get underpaid in his last deal? I'm trying to think of comparable players and the first that comes to mind is Carl Landry... who was basically paid the same. Scola actually earned less. PPat is similar. Lots of ex-Rockets here, but they all seem to have similar roles and salaries historically. Collison seems to have not only been paid fairly, but received a big chunk of it upfront. That might be team friendly, but it also happened to be Nick Collison friendly.

I can only surmise this contract is a result of his locker room impact to the team. He definitely doesn't deserve this much.

He was the only player remains during the Supersonic era and that actually will mean something.

He never even tried to be a free agent in his life, there are only a very shot list of player with this kind of record whose playing more than 10 years in the league.

He signed a very friendly contract in his previous deal so its logical that the team will have some verbal future commitments.

I forget the exact numbers, but OKC didn't underpay Collison on his last contract. They gave him a huge signing bonus the 1st year because they had leftover cap space back in 2010. The total value of the contract over 4 years was right in line with what he should have been paid.

It was very pro-Collison more than pro-OKC. Structuring it that way allowed them to pay him market value.

His last contract was 4 years 11 mils with a huge amount up front but that's basically meaningless as his contract is 100% guaranteed.

His contract prior to that was 4 years 31 mils.

At the time when he signed his 4 years 11 mils contract, that was consider a bargain as he was still a very decent player at that time.
