What needs to happen for this team to make the finals?

I think that if all goes well, this Rockets team can represent the Western Conference in the NBA finals this season. So what would have to happen for this to become a reality? Here is what I believe:

    1. Howard must return to his dominant form. I'm not going to talk about what he needs to average, but he needs to dominate on both ends like he did during his peak years in Orlando. This would probably have to be one of the top 3 best seasons of his career, if not the best.

    2. Harden must reduce turnovers and improve defensively. Obviously Harden had a great season for us last year, but his defensive struggles have been well documented. He averaged 3.8 turnovers per game last season which is quite high and hopefully will reduce simply with the presence of Howard. There are times when he forced plays that aren't there and made ridiculous turnovers though, which needs to be eliminated

    3. Parsons must become an All-Star caliber player. Maybe not necessarily make the team, but be right in the conversation to make the team.

    3. Lin must become a top 10 PG. like him or hate him, Lin was not among the top half of starting PGs in the league a year ago. He needs to improve in really all areas, not just shooting.

    4. We need to find an answer at the PF position. Whether its starting Asik and Howard together (my preference), D-Mo, T Jones, or someone else. Somebody needs to establish themselves as a legitimate starting PF on a contending team.

    5. We need to get solid productivity from our bench. This is an obvious need for any contending team.

I believe that if these things happen, we can win the western conference and give the Heat a run for their money in the finals this season.

We need a PF, that's it. Whether it's DH being able to play there or DMO developing, someone has to be able to be at least average in that position.

DEFENSE. Team DEFENSE. They need to coach it better, and execute better.

every team in the NBA can put the ball into the hoop,

It's about putting it in 60-70 times and more than the opponent

What these young bloods have got to understand is...this game has always been, and will always be; about buckets.

While the game may be about buckets, I feel that the emphasis on offensive buckets may be over rated. Certainly the PF starting position is not about points scored. The Rockets have an abundance of players that can score. It comes down to the defense played against other power forwards like Milsap, LMA, Love, Duncan etc. While being able to score points at the PF spot may be important, defense is the ultimate criterion for who will be successful.

IMHO, that team would likely be the NBA favorites, and would likely win at least 2 championships during their run

    1. No injuries to major players
    2. All young players continue to develope their game
    3. One of our PFs steps up
    4. The defensive intensity of the whole team improves thanks to Howard

If those 4 things happen we have a real good chance.

Ahhh. But the Rockets will probably have to settle for much less than Parsons becoming an all-star and Lin becoming a top 10 PG. So very many unreasonable expectations. The bench is already there though.

Stay healthy. I think this team, as it stands, is a top 2 contender from the West. Health will allow this team to gel and health will allow it to excel.

I Hope those two guys we hired for conditioning/preventative care in the offseason are the best.
