When did PR turn down statehood? I'm no PR history buff, but from my understanding they were initially promised independence if they turned against the Spanish crown but the US went back on that promise.

 

There were at least 3 referendums on the topic of applying for statehood in Puerto Rico, 1967, 1993, and 1998 where the Puerto Rican citizens voted against applying for statehood before finally voting for it in 2012.....but there was some kind of issue where there were a ton of submitted blank ballots so they decided to ignore that vote and do another in 2017 where statehood overwhelmingly won out yet again due to a boycott by every party against statehood.

Basically though, if they hadn't voted against seeking statehood the first 3 times, things would be different for them.

 

If the point is she isn't a Puerto Rico official thats fair however she was an Obama administration employee as well
