Hoping the opposition leader fails is pretty normal across all politics.

At least they are open and honest about it... even if they are not open and honest about much else.

And suddenly everything is invalidated? They didn't exactly mis-report all the Republican cheering for America's failed bid at the 2016 Olympics. They didn't mis-report Limbaugh saying “I want him to fail”, knowing that the failure means more tough times for America.

I do apologize... it was not Toronto.... it was Montreal.

Cities of gold? The cost of previous games

    2008 Beijing

    Estimated cost: $35bn

    TV rights: $1.7bn approx

Verdict: If Chinese economy nosedives, could struggle to pay for grandiose plans. Massive scale prompted IOC reaction against 'gigantism'. Record corporate sponsorship forecast.

    2004 Athens

    Estimated cost: $7bn

    TV rights: $1.47bn

Verdict: Spiralling security and construction costs (from $4bn to $7bn and counting) and low ticket sales could spell financial disaster.

    2000 Sydney

    Cost: $2.25bn

    TV rights: $1.3bn

Verdict: Needed a government bailout, but boosted economy by $3.3bn. Long-term tourism boom failed to materialise, due to September 11.

    1996 Atlanta

    Cost: $991m

    TV rights: $898m

Verdict: The apotheosis of the privatised, commercialised Olympics. $300m profit (less than the expected $3.4bn) but did little for the city's reputation.

    1992 Barcelona

    Cost: $9.1bn

    TV rights: $636m

Verdict: City only got $3bn revenue from $10bn investment, but tourist numbers almost doubled long-term, thanks to increased prestige. Olympic zone now tatty, though.

    1988 Seoul

    Cost: $3.1bn

    TV rights:$400m

Verdict: Modest ($30m) operating profit, but South Korea's economy grew by 12 per cent in games year. Unparalleled political and economic showcase.

    1984 Los Angeles

    Cost: $483m

    TV rights:$287m

Verdict: The first profitable Olympics since 1932, LA's $1.4bn windfall made it the template for the commercialisation of the games. Run along strictly business lines - even the stadium was recycled from 1932.

    1980 Moscow

    Cost: Undisclosed

    TV rights: $101m

Verdict: First games behind Iron Curtain. US, Japan and West Germany among countries who boycotted event in protest against Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, which torpedoed visitor numbers. Soviet state picked up the tab.

    1976 Montreal

    Cost: $2.8bn

    TV rights: $32m

Verdict: A financial fiasco. Costs quadrupled from $350m to $1.4bn, buildings were unfinished and Montreal was left with vast debts - they'll finally pay off the stadium costs in 2006.

(TV rights are split between the IOC and the host city.)

I don't understand. ARe you trying to imply that the only economic benefit comes from TV rights?

That is just one part. There is huge influx of people who need hotels, eat at restaurants, buy things at stores, and pay taxes for those things. All of that helps the host city as well.

There are giant construction and renovation jobs that are required. That helps contractors boosts employment which also leads to those workers putting more into the economy as well.

The amount of printing jobs just on signs, fliers, coupons, advertising, programs, is absolutely huge for a host city.

The extra help just to work and supply concessions is a big boon to the economy.

To try and compare the total cost of the Olympics to just the TV contracts is pretty silly.

It's like saying trying to investigate how an obese person's diet contributed to their obesity, but only looking at the salad or first courses they ate over the period of a month. Look at all the food they intake and it will give a more accurate picture of what's going on.

Look at all the sources of income for the host city rather than just one of many sources.

Read the verdicts underneath each city. It doesn't just includes tv rights, it's the outcome from hosting the Olympics.

You should definitely look at what you posted. The only Olympics that have profited were those in America.

    Yup.

Glen Beck, Rush Limbough and other clowns trying to outdo each other for the spotlight. Saying outrageous 'please quote me' things. Trolls of the airwaves. WHo'da thunk. Showbiz. They thank you in advance for your continued interest in what they say.

We all knew exactly what some from the extreme right have been conditioned to support. I can't blame them when the party's "leaders" are Rush, Hannity and that piece of human waste named Bill on Faux News.

The verdicts are dubious and obtuse (on purpose I suspect). Compare central Atlanta from when the games where hosted to 10 years down the line. The major gains of hosting the Olympics is a long term dramatic improvement of the local economy.
